Underdrive pulley- why don't you have one?

Nothing for the 5.0L still... :(

All I see for truck 5.0L is up to 97, and I seriously doubt that is the explorer style timing cover and accessories.....would have to call.
the Explorer setup is unique as far as serpentine systems for the 5.0L I am 99% sure
That does not mean an existing pulley will not work, but I dont think that listing on their site covers the Explorer engine (more like Bronco, F-150)

Way too much money for me. If it was like $100 i might consider, but $300 is way too much money for me. That's two weeks pay for me being a college student. Though I am driving my Ex to school and back 3 days a week (56 miles round trip) and would like increased mileage, the initial investment is way too much. Rather put the money towards buying a second car.

UD pullys are a great compliment to your other perf mods (a little here, a little there)
Matbe good for 8/10 ponys.
Downside is they are pricey (got mine on a GB for 260 shipped) plus you need a new serp belt 30 or so bux.
They are a stage 3 mod, only after you get a flasher, intake and exhaust,IMO
Are they worth it? not as a stand alone mod, do they free up H.P. Yep, a little.

My reason for installing the pulleys was for gas mileage, and they definately work in that area,

I have not dynoed since installing mine so I don't have HP data yet.

The reason the UDP is expensive is because it is not simply a pulley, but a combination crank vibration damper and pulley.

i'm too lazy, especialy when its cold out. or when i start working on something its like a homing beacon for people to find and me and talk to me. I cant work, talk, and think simultaneously so i have quite a few unfinished or never started projects.

i have yet to find a set for the 4.6. i have used them on my 01 4.0 SOHC and they were great

Not sure how they work on an X, but on import cars that I have used them on, I've lost AC output, Alternator output, & had more power steering effort.
I could care less about gas milage. On a 1st gen I doubt there would be very little gain in that deparment anyway.
I also read the 4.0L& 5.0L Ford engines uses a harmonic balancer, & if you disrupt that by swapping pullies you could cause internal engine damage over time.

I experienced none of these.

Must be nice to be able to not have money concerns.:)

On the 4.0 motors, the harmonic balancerhas the pulley ( crank ) built into the assembly; you replace the entire assembly to underdrive.

Al didn't swap out your alt pully because of some problem?
No probs here J, alt output at warm idle is 13.8, those that run alot of electronics may have probs tho.

Al, my situation is a little different. My EX is not a keeper. When it goes I will just replace it. Maybe when I buy a newer one (if my EX ever goes :dead: )I will do some of the things that you did. I paid $1,800.00 for my 92 EX 3 years ago and have only spent about $500.00 on it to date including Kris' rebuilt hubs (which work great).
However let be known that I DO keep a watchfull eye :shifty_ey out for your great tips.

would just adding the underdrive pulley alone make a improvement? without messing stuff up... note: its a 91 explorer without any computer mod.

im considering this when i take out my a/c

are you selling them?

this is an awful strange thread-

i'm not going to start a list of all the possible good reasons people dn't have them (or why i don't have them), but i don't really see why you'd want that list anyways???

Main reasons:

1) It spins the accessories slower. They weren't designed to be spun slower. Because they are spun slower, it does reduce the A/C, alternator, and power steering output, even if you personally can't tell.

2) Risk of spun crank bearings & cost. Paying to have a spun bearing? No.

While there are cost effective benefits to underdrive pulleys, I personally would only use them on a vehicle for extreme performance or racing applications. If the rules don't allow for electric motors to drive the alternator and power steering systems, then an underdrive pulley is a simple and effective way to free up some power.

Most Explorers are daily driven, with the driver more concerned about the comfort and convienence the A/C and electronic accessories provide than extracting the most power from the engine. Easier modifications such as air filters, intakes, and performance mufflers and exhaust systems are probably a better idea for most people.

Thanks for your opinion about underdriving.

I have not experienced any of the problems driving daily in Florida, I have only experienjced better gas mileage and better acceleration.

I personally see underdriving as a win win situation.

Again, thanks for commenting.

Underdrive pulleys are great, if the factory accessories are already running too fast. Early pulleys brought the alternator speed below adequate levels, I have a 91 LSC with them on, the voltage hovers under 12 volts at idle.

I gather that they are a good idea for the V6 SOHC engine.
