Uniroyal Tire Goes Boom

My Dad finally replaced the original tires on his 96 Buick Regal GS with 50k, after much prodding...they literally crumbled apart as the tire machine worked to break the bead...next is to get him to replace the 10 year old Michelins on his van, I pointed out the cracks in the sidewall but he wasn't impressed, after a lifetime of last-forever bias-ply tires.

you don't need to change the title back, i was just wondering how/if you changed it. i once spelled something wrong in a title and couldn't figure out how you got back into it.

If you're the original poster, there's an Edit button on the first post in the thread. On the "edit post" screen there's another Edit button; clicking that goes to a screen where the thread title can be changed.

2 of my trucks still have the original unused exploding Firestone tires as spares. i've been meaning to find out what i can do to get them replaced, but i keep forgetting to ask my tire dealer about them. if i got a flat right now i'd use them to crawl to the tire shop.

Good luck getting replacements. Five or six years ago I did the same thing with a spare - the guys at the local Firestone tire shop were clueless about the recall.

After much time calling their home office, they said that the recall had long since ended, but they'd give me a replacement tire a courtesy.

I installed a full set of 4 Michelin LTX M/S2 on our 03 Sport last month. Michelin had/has a $70 mail-in rebate going on and I received my $70 rewards card last week. Back in Oct 2007 I put a set of 4 Michelin LTX M/S tires on at 75,000 miles. When I replaced those last month mileage was roughly 160,000. Thats 85,000 miles on them over 7 years. Most of my driving is highway driving between DE and east coast Canada. The M/S tires were great in ALL driving conditions from hot summer days, rain, deep snow in Canada as well as some light off roading to a few remote campsites up there. I found a thick knife blade one morning in one of them a few years ago (grumble) and had it replaced. I had the original unused spare tire from 03 removed and this newer M/S put on for safety when I had the new ones installed last month. The M/S2s are a bit softer and thus just a tad quieter on the highway though barely noticeable. I hope I get the same great use out of these!

Since the M/S2s went on I've put about 4k miles on them and so far I like them just as much as the past M/S tires. If you're looking for a replacement tire or set I'd recommend them for sure.

I gave away my Firestone recall replacement spare, a Goodyear Wrangler RT/S. I don't think it was ever even dropped from underneath, or ever used. The girl I gave it to pry drove a year on it, no problems.

Discount tire had a "buy two tires, and get a Visa Gift card" promotion. I pick up a pair of Hankook Optimo H724 for around $67 each after gift card amount. Mounted one on my spare, selling the other one.

I just replaced my M/S's with M/S2s on my XLT...for me they were very noticably softer and quieter, and I'm pleased. However, my old M/S tires were 9 years old and starting to squeal every time I turned a corner. Practically brand new when it came to tread depth, but I think the rubber had gotten hard.

Costco had a special coupon for Executive members...$140 off a set of 4, so I got the 4 tires + installation and everything for $460 IIRC.

Damn. If I could have got Michelins for that price, I would have got another set for sure. The Firestone Destination LE2 I have were $440 total installed out the door. Basically four of these were the price of three Michelins. I am satisfied with the Firestones though

Glad this was posted. I've never though about my spare. It's the original 18 year old unit. This just moved to the top of my to do list.
