Upper Intake Gasket Question

I am getting code 0174 and an intermittent smell of gasoline with no appearant leaking. Could bad upper intake manifold gaskets be causing this?
It is a 1999 stock Explorer.

Yes, a leaking upper intake could definitely be the trouble. Be sure to check the vacuum lines well for cracking.
