I am very keen to buy a Dec 97 (USA) XLT V6 Auto Explorer but I can't test the 4WD because the owner does not know how to use it.

He does not have an owners manual and I don't know anything about 4WD's so he will not let me try it.

The switch has 3 positions - these are auto, 4WD low & 4WD high.

People have told me it needs to be in neutral before the switch is moved into 4WD low?????
I have also been told to unlock the front 4WD hubs, you need to drive in reverse??????

Can someone please give a step by step explaination - how to operate the switch for auto to 4WD low and to 4WD high so I can safely test drive this mans car.

Also, where is the engine number located?

Thanks alot.

You can switch from auto to 4hi at any speed. To switch to 4lo, put the truck in neutral, step on the brake, and switch it to 4lo..it will click and the "low" light will come on. To get it out of 4lo, put the truck in neutral, and switch it to 4high or auto...the "low" light will go out...you do not need to back that truck up to release the hubs because it doesn't have conventional 4wd hubs...all the switching is done in the xfer case.

What do you mean by 'engine number'? If you mean the vehicle identification number, it's at the base of the windshield on the driver's side.
