My question is- will a 302 bolt up to a 4.0 tranny without an adapter. This is my second 4.0 and both have blown the head gasket. The 302 is more dependable, & a lot less scarce.

If you're seriously thinking about doing a 5.0 swap into an explorer then you are basically going to throw-out your 4.0 engine, transmission, and probably the transfer case as well. Oh yeah... and you'll probably lose your air conditioning too. Trust me - I've done it. Are you still interested?

There are literally a thousand posts that cover this issue, so please pardon the short reply. As "410" says, try a search.

Cheers!

No reason to lose your AC even without a body lift

True - you *can* keep the A/C if you're careful with your design and parts selection... Your upper intake (elbow), motor mounts, fan, radiator, and water pump all dictate clearance for the A/C. So if A/C is important, you just need to 'design it in' to your swap.

I suppose I could have kept A/C in the truck, but that would have probably requred an electric fan (possibly a 'pusher' configuration), a 45 degree elbow on the upper plenum for air intake, and messing with the radiator & motor mount placement to make room for the condensor. I might have also considered an electric water pump instead of a mechanical... but...

I live in New York and use my 5.0 X mostly for trails and hunting, so I decided A/C was not worth the extra effort. In hindsight, that decision saved me a lot of work and money, and it made everything else in the engine compartment a little easier to get to.

Cheers!

well in the 93 4 door my friend drives with a HO 5.0L under the hood, we kept his AC, his HO intake points to the drivers side, all he had to do was make a throttle cable bracket for that.
The plenum on the heater box is of course notched for the valve cover
His HO engine uses the stock 5.0L compressor with the 4.0L Explorer condensor, etc

My 88 BII uses all factory 97 Mountaineer AC with a 1988 Bronco II heater box, the plenum is again notched to clear the valve cover and header.
I have a mechanical fan and my custom radiator is mounted under the radiator support, plenty of room for the 4.0L condensor in front of it.

Joe's Ranchero with a 96 Explorer 5.0L drivetrain also uses the stock compressor, a car condensor in front of his radiator but he went with a vintage air hot rod AC box setup because his ranchero never had AC to begin with.

AC can fit using stock Ford parts, you dont need an electric fan, you dont even have to use the GT-40 Explorer style serpentine system, all thats required really is the notch in the heater box and some custom hoses once the conversion is done.

410 do you have some more info on your friends v-8 swap considering to do mine but I want the f/i ac basically a sleeper 5.0 explorer...

yes tried search (v-8 swap 5.0 swap come up only 4 post)
