2002 Eddie Bauer V6 4WD
I have a 2002 V6 4.0L Eddie Bauer with 62,000 miles that I've owned since new. The timing chain rattle that sounds like engine knocking and only happens at certain RPM range and load has been with the truck for a very long time, I would say since the day we got it but my memory fails me.

Since I switch to Dead Link Removed motor oil the chain rattle has been almost nonexistent. It still happens occasionally but far less frequently than it did and with less volume when it does. I previously had been running a group II+ conventional (mineral) but good quality 5W-30 oil. I was not expecting this effect from a motor oil, but it certainly is a welcome one!

Ours only rattles when cold. I would think that the 0W 30 oil is thinner at startup when cold. I just make the wife let it idle for a minute before she takes off.

I'm on the same boat, I just let it idle before taking off. But lately it has been rattling really bad on acceleration, it goes away after the engine is well warmed up, I hope it does not get worse. I switched to Mobil 1 5w-30 and it seamed to just get worse. I might try the Amsoil.

I switched AWAY from Mobil 1 because of that. I also quit using the Wix filter in the Explorer. The drain back valve is not right and it rattled on startup something fierce with it. With Motocraft filter and their oil it doesnt rattle at all on startup and the timing chain click is lessened.

Interesting responses, thanks! I suspect too that the better cold flow properties of the 0W oil vs. a 5W are, at the least, partly responsible. Time will tell as I only have ~200 miles on the new oil.

I used a Wix filter on this change and it does not have any rattle - but thanks for the heads up I'll keep an ear out for it.
