valve timing 4.0 sohc 1998

hi there can anyone tell me the cam timing on a 1998 X with a 4.0l sohc
ford wont lend me the tools so i am going to use a timing disc ans dial gauge
ether at what point before or afther tdc inlet valve opens
or at what degres maxium lift occers
can any one help me i do not have a workshop manual

The only thing the Haynes book says is use the special tools. It gives no indication as to the actual timing.

Ditto for Chilton's
You might ask around from different repair shops, engine rebuilders, surely someone will lend you the tools.
Chilton's lists about 8 tools total for the procedure-----ouch
I had a hard time finding the special cmp tool, finally asked ford racing to recommend a good speed shop, which I called. He lent me tool, over the phone, without even knowing me, and he mailed it to me 125 miles away.
Of course I returned it promptly, with a liquid gift, in person.

so its impossible to change the timing chains without the "ford special tool"? I was gonna go in and change mine out on the SOHC this thanksgiving break.

no small engine place has the tools and ford will not loan the tools out
need to see tools to copy or camshaft data to set it up
there must be some figers somewere for it

I suggest buying a chilton or Haynes sevice manual and looking over the procedure. It is rather involved. I haven't done it myself, and the manuals aren't always right, but it says you have to remove the heads. The timing chain setup is comprised of several parts which need to be sychronized ( timed) looks like there is a balance shaft there also.

Do not do it without the tools, if you don’t get it right it will cost you, and I am not even sure you can even retime the Cam shaft’s without the tools.

I assume you have had a fair amount of mechanical experience, as this is not the sort of job you decide to do over the weekend, and it’s not something you want to stuff up.

i am a mecanic got the engine on the bench jush install the chains now waiting
it may be going for a ride to the ford dealers in me trailer on the back of me cab
we will see when it timed up i might make some tools of my own (just in case)

Others have bought the tool set, and resold it afterwords. I am keeping mine for future use. Regards,
