Vehicle Speed Sensor problem

The ABS and cruise control seem to work fine. Also the Overdrive off light will flash sometimes. Not aways but about 50% of the time it will come on when driving and flash.

Same Problem here

My spedo quit working I did replace the VSS with the one from Autozone. I got it in but now it will not come back out. I did not replace the gear. I did find out that you can test the VSS by putting a drill on the end of it. Should have done that in the first place the old one was good. Would anyone know how I might pry the VSS back out, dont care if it breaks I have the old one that still works. Here is the problem, no speedometer, shifts rough into second the the o/d off light flashes, I have no overdrive only 1st 2nd and 3rd.

Welcome to this forum! Remove the bolt, and twist it until it comes out. The O ring is the only thing holding it in place after you remove the bolt. Check the inner gear (not the gear connected to the VSS) after you pull out the VSS to see if there is any damage on the threads.

I have a similar problem. I have a 96 4x4 with v6. VSS code shows up, but vss is good. Ford dealer checked with bore scope, says replace gear in Transf. case. I am told by one shop that gear can be replaced without dropping transfer case. Another says no. Anyone know about this? I checked and replaced rear diff.sensor. Costs are a lot more if case is dropped.

I have an 01 sport 2WD that take a little time to register speed. Does anyone where the VSS is located? Thanks in advance.

in 98-01 its the ABS sensor in the rear axle, on the top side of the rear diff

Thanks electrohacker. Just went out and looked at it. Seems pretty straight forward on remove and replace.
