I have been looking around the site and can not find an answer to my question. I have a 1997 Ford Explorer 5.0l. I am swapping a NP435 to replace the 4R70 along with a new transfer case. I am also taking the powertrain and dropping it into a 78 Bronco, or swapping the whole explorer body onto the Bronco frame (Haven't decided what I am doing yet).

My question is which speed sensor does the engine need, the one on the rear axle or the one on the tranny? Also does anyone know if I technically need the VSS if I am swapping in the manual transmission? The only thing I can think of it affecting is the Deceleration Fuel Shut Off. I am looking into relocating the 8.8 tone ring onto the dana 44 somehow if need be.

Thanks

It's the t-case one. Obviously you'd have no speedo with no sensor :D , but I bet you knew that.

WOW thats an advanced project

ACTUALLY it depends on which motor you have. I have heard that the LATE 97's could have the P heads and therefor MIGHT have the ABS sensor in the axle supplying the VSS

odds are its the transfercase sensor though
