I have reason to believe that the VSS drive gear on my '96 4WD needs to be replaced.

However, I cannot find a definite answer as to whether or not this gear can be removed and replaced in-vehicle or if the transfer case must be removed and dis-assembled.

Anyone?

Regards... Mike

Look to the rear output of the transfer case. There you find the VSS with a plastic gear.

You don't have to remove the transfer case.

...not the driven gear

Hi, thanks for the replies.

Just to be clear... I'm referring to the gear within the transfer case that the VSS gear meshes with, not the gear that is clipped to the working end of the VSS.

I replaced the badly worn VSS gear recently and that fixed the problem for a few weeks. Now it has returned, so I suspect that the drive gear is worn as well.

Well.. you found the problem.

How'd you get it out?

It was easy: the gear slides out after removing the 30mm nut, washer and flange (after disconnecting the driveshaft of course).
