- '98 v6 xlt
hey guys, i just got a new 98 4dr xlt with the 4liter sohc v6 engine and i've been skimming through the threads here looking for information on various things.
i wanna take it in sometime soon to get serviced, it is in pretty good condition but i wanna get the most out of it in terms of city mileage as well as increase its overall lifespan. previously i had an 89 fullsized bronco with 250k on it (the explorer has 107k) so i know if i take good care of her she'll last me a long time.
the things i've been wondering though mainly deal with improving the mileage on it which seems to be a bit on the low side, and i was hoping to get some numbers on certain specifications for replacment parts.
things i wanna replace...
spark plugs and related wiring
air (k&n type) and fuel filter (tranny filter too?)
pvc valve
fuel pressure regulater
maf sensor (either replace or clean up)
i was curious if the stock exhaust system is sufficent or if i could install a dual exhaust setup (if i can what size/type would i look for)
i also wanna replace all fluids (engine/tranny) but i suppose the transfer case needs to have it fluid changed, what kind does it use?
the brakes seem rather rusty from some period of non-use but the main thing that worries me is that it seems that one (or some) of them might be dragging and i figured i'll have to have them replaced. in particular the parking brake seems to be a bit gimpy...
when i try to engage the parking brake, most of the time the light on the console doesn't light up and when i take my foot off the brakes the explorer will travel a bit till it comes to a rest and when it does the shift lever will jerk a bit so i dont quite think the parking brake is fully operational. if it needs to be replaced what parts would i be looking for?
in terms of fluid replacement what specifications am i looking for? engine, tranny, transfer case... but do you have to replace any fluids in the front and rear differentials?
i was also curious what the ratio numbers are with the stock transmission it has. with the amount of miles it has on it how long do you think it will last? i was also wondering if theres anything i can do to smooth things out a bit when shifting gears... its alot harder then it was on the bronco and i was hoping i could just make it a bit easier to handle
basiclly i'll put it all like this.... if you just got this thing what would you guys do to make sure everything was running at its highest potential? if i thought about it a bit longer i could prolly come up with a mess load of more things to ask but the girlfriend is moaning in the backround so i have to go now
any help would be greatly appreciated, ty all
