how hard is it to replace a water pump on my 91 Explorer. it has 110K on it and im sure it has never been done. i think it is starting to leak a bit , im also going to have to replace this loud power steering pump that is now leaking. how many hours am i looking at any one done this already . any special tools besides for the PS pump pulley? i once changed a WP on a ford 302 and i had to take every damn thing off to get it out, this was on the side of the road in the mountains . atleast i had a good veiw cause i was there for a while! any help is appreciated. thanks!

water pump requires you to use a special tool, i got at pep boys, and returned when finished, (tool loan) you will need it to remove the fan. other than that its a "two wrench job" good luck

I second Scott's sentiments. Borrow the Clutch fan removal tool from your local auto parts store's tool loaner program (I used Murray's) I struggled for a while trying to get the clutch fan nut loose with channel locks (which someone here actually claimed they could do) before getting the tool. With the tool, I had the clutch fan off in about 2 minutes. The rest of the job is straight forward.

While you're at it, change the radiator and heater hoses and the thermostat if they haven't been changed recently. It's much easier to get to everything with the fan and shroud and belt off.
