2017 xlt v6 . Coolant low a few times took it in with 3000k left on power train . They say water pump replacement and oiler cooler leak is covered and will be doing. Question is what else can I do while it’s apart To save me money on labour ? Timing chain ? Plugs ? Thoughts?

Ask how much to replace the timing chains since they already have it apart. It's got to be a lot cheaper than replacing them at a later date when they have to tear it apart again. That is if you are panning to keep it for a while.

Welcome to the Forum.
Not a bad idea to replace the timing chain while things are apart.

When I replaced the water pump. I also had the timing chain, guides, front crank seal and the oil pump replaced

I replaced the same as Don along with spark plugs.

I never have my vehicles long enough to change anything except the oil and filter. :)

Does anyone know what Ford is doing to fix the water pump issue? I understand they are now fitting the motors with an external water pump after the 2 Class Action lawsuits got their attention. If they are making an external water pump, on these new engines, can I purchase the external water pump from Parts Depot and up-fit it to my Explorer? It should be plug-N-play if they use the same block, which I know they would have to. Does anyone know just wazz-up wit datt?

If you are talking about fitting external water pumps on the 5th gen with the 3.5L engine, then that is news to me. The reason it is internal in the first place is that there was no room to install it externally being that the engine is mounted transversely. In the 6th gen, the engine is mounted longitudinally and allows for an external water pump.

Yes, I saw that on the internet that an external one was planned or available?? I can't find anything further about it however. Yes, there is a serious space issue if that were to happen.

The same engine (3.5L/3.7L V6) in the Ford pickups and Mustangs are modified to have the water pump externally mounted. With these vehicles the engine is mounted longitudinally and not transversely like the front wheel drive vehicles.

Oh, Maybe I will have to make a hole somewhere?

You won’t have room, or you’d already have an external pump.

You’re going to be stuck with it being internal, and if it fails out of warranty it’s not Fords responsibility.

Yes, thanks for the valued info.

The best you can do is what I am doing with our 2015 Edge. Keep a constant eye on your coolant level. ANY drop in coolant is cause for immediate concern. If you are lucky the water pump will fail slow enough to not have a catastrophic failure that takes out the engine.

Besides, you’d still have to yank the motor. You couldn’t leave a failed pump inside the motor.

Yes, I just flushed and changed the radiator fluid. I use full synthetic oil with a friction additive. Yes, I will just cross my fingers and look for a aftermarket warranty.,

Keep in mind that a water pump replacement can be done for $1,500-$2,000 so don't pay too much for an extended warranty that you might never use. I plan to replace the water pump in our Edge at around 130k-140k miles unless it starts to fail before then. Good, legitimate extended warranties on high mileage vehicles are not cheap.

I had extremely good payout from one used car warranty. 2 others I had, I used once and the other I didn’t use at all. I think I put over $8,000 on the first.

How much did the warranties cost and what was the maximum mileage/time they provided covered? Just curious as our Edge just went out of its extended warranty.

I got one who quoted $85.00 per Mo. for my 119K milage. I am planing a long trim this year and do not to be stranded 1,000 mile away and have to pay through the nose, no knowing a local service shop wanting to rip-off an out-of -stater. I will discontinue it after the trip.
