Weight Reduction

Paul - you apparently do not read a single thing that I have posted in this thread. Otherwise, you would not waste time rehashing or arguing against words that were not said:

I QUOTE: "Someday you may be somewhere where there is no telephone or maybe you will be somewhere that you shouldn't be. And you will be sitting on the edge of the bumper wondering why you have no spare tire and how you are going to get out of this mess."

1. The telephone arguement maybe true to somepoint, but from what I can recall, Cellular phones are available in the United States and unless you are away way out in the country - you will have a signal and help will be on the way.
2. Just in case if you do live out in the country (I stated "out in Guam") or will be "going on a long journey or offroading," I specifically agree with you that yes it would be a bad idea.

Losing weight is an option for many reasons such as improve gas mileage, in some cases driveability, racing, etc.

A second statement in my direction was - "If you knew anything about drag racing you would know that a 100lb weight saving equates to a 1/10th of a second reduction in 1/4 mile ET. If you can notice a difference on the street of 4/100ths of a second then go ahead and remove your tire. Hell, if you can prove to me that it is noticable I will throw away my spare tire and my jack and my tire iron."

Are you for real? You must be the one that does not know anything about racing to even make a statement like that. If you drag race or very similarly race from one light to the next, 1 tenth of a second can make all the difference in the world (its the difference between whether you will or lose), any competetent person should know that.
Rather than arguing nonsense, prove my theory correct by watching some drag racing on TV - if you have cable, try watching some ESPN. Then tell me how close a lot of the races are and then, maybe then, you can explain to the guy that lost, how it happened when he was only a tenth of a second behind.

Once again, this site is for information and suggestions, no demands are made that insist upon anyone following someone else's suggestions, we have free will. Someone asks for a suggestion, people make posts, they decide for themselves. Outway the risks against the benefits and decide for yourself.

Just a curiosity question: Is it possible to beat each other up by e-mail/internet??

Calm down, guys. It's OK to have different opinions.

It's just a simple difference of opinion - no love lost. God, everyone needs a little excitement in life even if its arguing over a tire :)

Wow!

I didn't think that this many people would write about this thread. There are some very interesting facts and ideas that have been through around here. First off, mike91, I did not know about 100 lbs. equaling 1\10th of a second in the quarter mile. Secondly, the idea of losing the roof. I have to admit that it would be fun be able to take off the roof when ever you want, but in the end it would probably more hassle than it is worth. I hate to say it, but if you are looking for that, sell your explorer and get a jeep (I know someone will get me for saying that). The main reason I started this thread was to find out if anyone makes fiberglass hoods and\or fenders for a 95' and up explorer. I think the only way that someone with the OHV V6 could get away from the feeling that their explorer is a big brick of steel would be to bore and stroke their V6, slap on a supercharger with nitrous spray to boot (plus headers and cat-back). Of course that is my opinion, I always could be wrong.

Peace out,

Drew

P.S.- If anyone wants to know what is happening with BBK's supercharger, I am starting a new thread.

I saw some pretty cool lightwieght hoods for the explorer.. but they are the bolt on type. Hmph.

My thoughts on the spare issue

I agree that it is ones on decision to choose whether or not to carry a spare, but consider these points first:

1. Will AAA come out into BFE on the trail to change your flat?
2. If so, how are they going to find you when you can't give them a location other than "somewhere on the <name> trail?
3. Are you willing to sit there stranded for however long it takes AAA to get there when you could have had it changed in 15 minutes had you carried one?

Just a few thoughts to consider.

Well..on the trail you would carry a spare! :) Just for racing or whatever, you lose the weight. While on the subject of spares. I need one. Any ideas where to get a cheap rim? Hmmm

not fiberglass

When I said that I was looking for fiberglass finders and hood, I meant to say that I was looking for carbon fiber fenders and hood. So if anyone out there knows where I can get some carbon fiber panels, please let me know.

I heard that carbon fiber was actually made from finely pressed one hundred dollar bills; this would explain the price and the light weigh, but the strength part.....?!

Later on,

Drew

Carbon Fiber?! Yeeesh. I havent seen anything. Its hard enough finding fiberglass. Whats wrong with fiberglass? not light enough for ya? :)
