My tire is not underneath the vehicle anymore and its in the back bolted down, but i am going to take it out and buy 2 cans of tire flat stuff and carry that around instead.

I may even remove my backseats as i never use them for anything but groceries or things i throw on in the vehicle.

If you can get rid of 100-200 pounds or more of extra weight, you can save MPG.

So i am just wondering:

How many ppl have their spare tire still installed on their vehicle and or have taken it out and stored it at home?

How many people take out any extra non-needed items like back seats, tools and what not out of their vehicle?

Does anyone else have any other ideas to make these FAT explorers Lighter without striping it all down?

Yes i read on how the EPA tests are done and each vehicles MPG is rated on 300 pounds of people weight in the vehicle. So the extra tire = 1 person, any extra tools chest that equal 100 pounds or more = 1 person or more.

So basically if people were to remove 300 pounds somewhere from the vehicle you should gain a little more MPG.

Also for the explorers that means the FORDS average which is 15-16 mpg in town is based upon 300 pounds of people in the vehicle, plus the tire.

I drive alone most of the time except when i have my son in the vehicle and a certain girl i take out from time to time.

I am stating like common sense would be that extra weight = more MPG burning.

extra tire weighs that much?

Extra tire/rim = 100 pounds easily.

When i stated 300 pounds of people weight = 3 people, 100 pounds each.

I also have about 100-140 pound tool chest in back seat area.

I also have a 60-80 pound towing chain in the back.

but i am going to take it out and buy 2 cans of tire flat stuff and carry that around instead.

I would maybe not do that. That stuff is a mess, corrosive to the wheels, and some tire places won't even touch a tire that's had that stuff put in it.

The spare tire doesn't weight 100lbs first of all. And your mpg will drop significantly if your stuck on the side of the road with a blow out and no spare tire. Fix a flat is only so good...mainly for nails, you pop a tire on the highway by the time you stop you've ruined the tire and the chances are slim it will hold any air. I just make efforts to improve my mpg while maintaining the things in my vehicle. I too have a tool box, sub box, haul tool for works here and there, and keep my spare on the vehicle because it's not worth the risk, at best you'd gain 1mpg MAYBE 2 but I doubt more then that. I especially wouldn't risk being stranded with my son in the car.

I did a test several years ago on the effect of the spare tire on gas mileage.

On a 500 mile run to Atlanta with my son following ( actually leading ) me in his Titan PU, I put my spare in his truck. On the return trip, I installed it in its home under my truck.

The gas mileage ( I forget the actual numbers, but 30 something ) on both legs of the trip were virtually identical.

The only time I notice a difference in my MPG is when my truck is fully loaded with camping gear.

It doesn't help that the X's have the aerodynamics of a brick.

You got some skinny ass people up in Canada :D

Well i never made the EPA 300 people weight, it could have been 2 individuals or 1, it said people... so how many is "people" 1-3 maybe.

Up in Canada the Women are so nice and beautiful i love driving around my town .. hot women with hot bodies, ya gotta love the ones that go bareback/front in summer time or even now its 20 C out and wow.. some have they lost their shirts aleady downtown.

Yup, it's only about 50lbs, probably not that.

Well i forgot to state i have two spare tires one underneath and one in back... :p:

I don't know why i stated 1 tire = 100 lbs, Acid Rain i suppose... :D

Ok, then you have about 60 or 70lbs. This prompts me to ask, why do you have two spares? Take one out.
