weird problems after cruise control recall

ford completed the cruise control on my car a couple of days later my car started acting weird, today when i went to start my car the engine started abnormally, i turned the car off and when i went to start the car again there was no power going to anything in the car , it was acting as if there was no battery in the car. i opened the hood and noticed that the battery terminal was loose i tightened the terminals and the car started up. but for the first minute the car was almost stalling out, i ran an OBDII test and no engine codes, after about an hour the car is starting to run properly again anyone have any idea your help is greatly appreciated

sounds like they didnt replace the neg terminal, and it worked loose. But, you're ok now, right?

Sounds as if the period of no voltage was long enough to clear the memory in the engine computer (ECM). When you got it restarted, the ECM had to "relearn" it's settings for proper idle, etc. My more expensive OBD tester says "emissions not ready" or something like that until the relearn is complete, but the cheaper one just says "no codes".

So long as the battery terminals stay connected OK, this should not happen again as no damage was done. I got the cruise control recall for one of my Fords the other day, but I get really nervous about letting them touch any of my cars.

afraid to take it in

I received notification about the cruise control recall almost two months ago. I don't like someone else working on my car and especially when I can't watch what they're doing. I'm afraid they'll rip out some of the wiring I've added for various modifications. I may just take my chances with the cruise control as it is. Or maybe I can learn the specifics of the recall and do it myself. From what I've read, the correction is to add fuse protection to prevent a overheating condition in case of a short.

If anyone would like to share what was done I'd be very grateful!

Once the computer relearned everything the car runs better still a little rough idle but that was happening before the recall, im looking into the PCM upgrade hope it helps, as for the recall all they did was unclip the old harness connector and added a inline fuse to both of the wires going to the cruise control, the fuses that the put in the harness seem to be a standard size fuse most likely but they could mini's not sure going to look tommorow, and let you guys know the result. The funny thing is the big blue label states "This harness contains a non serviceable fuse if fuse is blown return to dealership" but looking at the harness there a two inline fuses on the wires::

Thanks for describing the recall implementation! The reason for the nonserviceable fuse notice is if the fuse blows then the shorting component should be replaced before replacing the fuse.

Please tell me more about the PCM upgrade you mentioned.

The correct recall was supposed to be a new signal switch to replace the other one. (unless they have changed it to the fuseable link) I have the fuseable link, as I found one in the junkyard with it and pulled/installed it on mine.

Honestly- IMHO, with the threat of burning up your car and/or your house, I would do the recall. Maybe ask them if you could see what they're doing? I don't think they'll mess with anything else, but I wouldn't put my safety in jeopardy over that...

When I took mine in a couple months ago to get the recall done, they did it right in the drive thru service line, didn't take it into the shop at all and I was able to stand right there and watch the entire minute that it took.

Nope, all they do is bridge the original connection with a fused set of wires.

?wait a minute, 3rd gens are not part of the recall? Its only 2nd Gens from what i read, correct??? ummm - i thought i was in the 2002-2005 stocks or did i hit the 2nd gen by mistake again, or am i in the twilite zone. . lol.

Anyways my cruise switch is actually on the Master Cyl, i replaced it due to a ABS fault. Anyone check and see if there is any volts there in 3rd Gens? I'll try and remember tonight. I'd hope they fixed for us, 2nd Gens on the other hand is it in the same spot?

It's on the master cylinder for 2nd gens but the design on most 3rd gens may have been fixed. Here's the affected list that pertains to here:

# 1998-2002 Ranger
# 1998-2001 Explorer/Mountaineer
# 2001-2002 Explorer Sport (2 door) & Sport Trac

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting on the letter, just call up your ford dealership and tell them you need to get the cruise control recall done.

Everyone I would check on your http://www.flmowner.com if don't have it sign up its the FORD website. BTW i have a 2002 XLT 4.6 and it lists a recall under 'my garage' section. Dealer told me it'll take 20mins. Hope that might help some confusion.

Good info, really dislike taking my Ex to the dealer as most of you. Glad to hear it is only about 20 minutes. I did receive the notice although I am the original owner. Hope to get it done in the next few weeks.
