Three weeks ago I repalced the rear axle seals & bearings on my '97 with 216k on it and there no pieces of metal in my housing.

I believe you, but just wondering did you stick your finger down in the gully at the very bottom of the housing that usually has a last little bit gear oil in it?

Yes I did to make sure that there wasn't any of the rollers or scrap from one of the outer axle bearings that shattered from using the slide hammer.
