theyre the wheel weights. those are the "clamp on" style. they put them on at various points on the edge of the rims to bring it into balance.

"can i buy them?

Why would you want to buy them?

Robb

they are rusted

Why would you need some? Did the tire poeople leave yours off? The wheel would be all over the road without them.....There are also stick on ones for nicer wheels, but they usually fall off:(

yeah, i have the stick on ones, but they suck. my rims dont have the "lip" to hold the clamp on ones.

eliteconcept, the only way to get new ones is to have your wheels rebalanced (i mean, im sure you can buy your own weights and try to clamp em on yourself, but thats trouble waiting to happen.) if you get your tires rebalanced, it usually costs about $10 per wheel. dont worry that theyre rusted. when you take them off, the dirt around where the weight was will wash off.

so when i get them rebalanced they will put new ones on?

ok cool i'll have to do that, they are rusted pretty good as you can see in the picture.

so depending on the wheel balance they put different weights on the tire there?

The weights change in size and location on the wheel, varying from tire to tire....The old ones might still be used though, in a new position....:(

I'm sure it wouldn't take too much to get new ones put on if it is necessary to rebalence them.

You could pull up at the tire shop and pop off the ones you have (screwdriver, hammer, pliers). Then clean the area well. Then go inside and get them balanced.

yeah if they aren't on there then i guess they'd have to put them on then eh? :)

Oh, most shops would put new ones on, but there is always the "cost cutter" shop that wouldn't give him the $2.00 in weights....

Elite:
Just make sure you ask them to put new ones on.

ok, i think i'll just go to walmart have them balanced, *even though i had bad experice there with them* i have a lifetime balance and rotation, i'll watch them work every min this time though

does walmart still or does any place have lifetime balance and rotation?

Yes National Tire and Battery still has Lifetime Balancing.... atleast I have it on my tires.

Elite, just a warning but if you go to a Tire shop and tell them that you want your tires re-balanced because your weights are rusted.... they might just laugh at you...

Come to think of it, the Weights are made of some type of Lead, and the metal band that clamps to the rim is usually a Galvanized metal. yes they will get surface rust but they should NEVER completley rust thru.

FWIW, I would leave them as they are. Unless your Explorer is a Show truck, and you HAVE to have it SPOTLESS!

have them re-balanced and the weights clamped on the INSIDE of the wheel. then, if the clamps rust again, no one will see it anyway.

They Can't! the weights are on the outside where they are for a Reason! The wheel need more weight there to be balanced..... if it needed it on the inside, and some do then they would be there also....

you can request that they put the weights on the inside lip instead of the outside. i have done this on EVERY vehicle i have ever owned, and never had a single balance issue.

in theory, the best way to balance a tire would be to use weights on both the inside lip and outside. just tell them to put the weights on the inside. do you really think those of us with nice aftermarket wheels would drive around with stupid ugly weights on the outside lip???
