A guy at work is selling his truck and I've been trying to talk him down for months but he's fairly stubborn.

Here are the spec's

'94 Ranger XLT SuperCab
200k miles
4.0 OHV
5spd M50D
Electric t-case
Power windows/locks/mirrors
Cruise control (?)
Bucket seats
Red with gray fender flairs

The body is in pretty good shape for a southern IN truck - no obvious rust/rot

5.5" Superlift with radius arm drop brackets
15" MT Classic II's
33x12.50 mudders
4.10 gears

He originally wanted $4k (what he paid a year ago) and now he's down around $3k

I still think $3k is high for a '94 Ranger with 200k miles

I'm thinking no more than $2500

He thinks that the lift/tires/gearing add quite a bit of value to the truck but I keep trying to inform him that the engine/trans are on their last leg.

I'd like to get it and do a SOHC swap like Brett did in his '94 Sport but I don't want to drop more than $5k in the truck including a rear locker and sliders.

What're your thoughts? I'd end up having to sell my Explorer to do this build up.

Probably $3,000 is more like a steal with the aftermarket parts!!!

Here is a quick run down list for those parts....

KBB book value Good w/200k
$2,925

MT classic II's - 4 New Mickey Thompson Classic Lock Wheels 15x8 $585.95 ebay price JUST FOR REFERENCE
$40.00 shipping

33 x 12.50 mudders - LT 305/70R16 Maxxis Buckshot Mudders (4 tires)
$685.00 - Ebay price JUST FOR REFERENCE

4.10 gears - 4.10 GEARS FORD 8.8" Motive $134 ebay price - Reference

5.5" Superlift - Superlift Lift Kit 5.5F/3R 89-97 Ford Ranger Mazda B's - $889
ebay price for reference.

Grand Total of aftermarket parts installed minus not even labor including which is probably at least a grand to 1500 range is $2,293

Truck and aftermarket parts value is approximately $5,218

Your price for the truck $3,000

So.............$5,218 minus - $3,000 is = $2,218 theres your savings right there if u had the truck and paid 4,000 like he did plus all those extra parts. Dude that is a great deal for 3,000 dollars. If i had 3k and some change just laying around i would beat u to it honestly PLUS that ranger i think has a TTB front end correct me if i'm wrong but thats a great buy.

Any other thoughts from anyone

Just my .02 cents worth. :us:

you cant expect to get what you paid out of something. hell i got close to 7 grand in my suspension and probably couldnt sell the whole truck for that much. thats why i think that buying a mod'd truck used is smarter, but your still taking a risk. you dont know the history.

i think 3 grand is a good deal but talk him down if you can.

Yeah, it has the D35 TTB which is an ok axle, stronger than a D30 solid axle but its still an IFS... kinda

I agree with Mr. Sandler.

Well it looks like his bottom line is a reluctant $3k... not sure if I should move on it or not. I'd drop alot of time/money building it and would have to sell my explorer and i'd still end up with a 12 year old vehicle...

I'm also looking at buying my dad's pristine '98 V8 Mounty for $5k

I've got a 91 ext cab 4x4 high step B/W manul trans. 4.0 needs trans work No rust only spent 1 winter in the snow I'll sell ya.....

Mods decrease the value of a truck, not increase it. Check it over real good and see if it was done right. You don't want to buy a truck you think is in good condition and have it turn out to be a basket case. I don't think it's unreasonable to offer him 2k and then bargain from there.

He's pretty much a stick in the mud as far as the price is concerned, so I'm probably going to let it go. :(

It'd be fun but a project truck like this is about 1-2 years too early for me as I'm not certain to where I'll be living in the next 3-9 months.

Give him some time, if it's still available a month from now, he may be more willing to go lower on the price.

You should give him a standing offer and ur phone number and just wait it out
then after he through with the low ballers and scheisters he might just call ya and say come and get it.

That's what I've been doing since about Sept/Oct - he originally wanted $4k

I thought then that if I could get him to $3k I'd buy it, but the more I research it the less value that it has.

I traded my Ranger in to get my X and I decided to just take what the dealer would give me. $2000.00 but mine wasn't lifted. Although it Bluebooked at $3100.00 I just couldn't wait to find a private buyer. They may be little trucks, but they do hold their value pretty well. As for all the add on goodies, some people actually take $$$ off if the vehicle has ben altered from stock. Good luck. My 2cents.

With that much lift on there i'd make sure that thing drives straight down the road. Lifted TTB suspensions are notorious for a bit of shimmying at certain speeds. Tell tale signs of this would be uneven wear on the front tires.
