hey guys, ive been doing google searches and calling ford dealerships and for some reason cannot find info on this subject because my 96 is so old. ive got a 96 sport 2wd.... axle code 41 if it matters, no manual. what is the damn towing capacity of this vehicle? im trying to buy a boat and want to know if im going to have to buy a new truck as well.

GCWR (gross combined weigh rating) starting on page "284" of the 96 Explorer manual which can be downloaded from Ford Fleet:

There is an entire section of explorerforum dedicated to towing. Recommend you browse through it.

41 — 3.27 non-limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer) is 2000 pounds max. Check the owners manual & your door sticker to verify. The real question will be how heavy is the boat, how far you intend to pull it, and road condition & grade.

The minimum items you will need are a trailer light wiring kit and a receiver hitch (bumper okay for small jon boat but not for anything heavy). Since its a sport with soft monoleafs, you may also want an inexpensive leaf helper or the ride will be soft and sway a lot with any kind of weight behind you. Also, be sure you tow with overdrive turned off.
