The 01M01 is a program, not a TSB(Trouble Service Bulliten). It extends the warrenty for up to November 2004 or 100,000 miles. This program covers the noise made from the timing chain hitting the chain guide.

I just have this done and though I would share what this all included for me. I believe Ford called it the Chain Guide and cam assembly.
  • 1 - DRV ASY-C/SHFT
  • 1 - GASKET - OIL PUM
  • 1 - ADPT ASY - OIL P
  • 1 - GASKET - OIL PAN
  • 1 - RING SE 37.69X
  • 4 - SCREW HX 11.9
  • 1 - SEAL ASY
  • 6 - GSKT - INTK MANF
  • 1 - GASKET CYL FRO
  • 1 - TUBE ASY-OIL P
  • 2 - O RING KIT -FU
  • 1 - THERMOSTAT ASY
  • 1 - RING SE 61 X 3
  • 1 - FILTER ASY - OIL
  • 5 - MOTOR OIL 5W30
  • 4 - ANTI/FZ
This all cost me $0. Had my truck in for 8 days.
While doing this I also have them replace the Cam Tensioner's (front and rear) which did not require removing the motor.
  • 1 - TENSIONER ASY $20.85
  • 1 - KIT INTAKE MAN $45.00
Plus $35 in labor for a total of $106.39
Now I have a smooth running truck.

When doing the work the technician did note that the plastic assembly was broken and there were pieces of plastic in my engine/engine oil pan. They cleaned it up and matched up all the pieces to determine that they had gotten them all and there weren't any from the rear which is not warrentied.

In addition, I would like to note that the 01M01 replaces the 00M12 which was only up to 72,000 miles.

01M01 does not replace 00M12. They are two different programs.

01M01 is as you said for the front camshaft chain guide. It doesn't end 11/04. It ends at 7 years, 100K miles for all '97 & '98 SOHC Explorers built through 10/20/98 at the Louisville Plant and through 9/18/98 at the St. Louis Plant. The 7 years begins at the date of delivery so if someone bought a '98 in 10/98, it would be covered under 01M01 through 10/05 (or 100K whichever came first).

00M12 is for the camshaft tensioners (the same parts your dealer charged you $106.39 to replace. I'm guessing either you have more than 72K miles or your Explorer didn't exibit signs of noisy tensioners or leaking manifold gaskets? If you had the symptoms and were under 72K miles, it should have been done at no charge as well. The $106.39 they charged though was an excellent price so they must have only charged you the additional labor that wasn't already included when they replaced your chain guides. The program allows for 1.8 hours to replace the tensioners and gasket which would have been about $130 in labor.

This plan covers the 4.0L SOHC engine. Since yours is the 5.0L V8, it isn't covered under this program.

Thanks Robert. The shop made it sound like the 01M01 replaced it, but he also "thought" the tensioners would be included. I have 97k miles so Yeah I'm over. The parts were $70ish and the rest was tax and labor.

This does cover the SOHC engine. I don't know about anything else. The problem is the noisey tenstioner/guide that sounds like you have a diesel or a metal chain slap.

As far as 11/04. I am mistaken. He told me 11/03 which is 7 years from maunfacture date on my truck.

Just though I would post this as I was confused going into this. Just knew there was some sort of program and that this "could" become a major problem.

i've read that this problem is usually a ratteling in the front/top on the engine. I'm taking my truck in for the 00m12 service, and can probally get them to do the 01m01 service as well (i work at a compamy that buys millios in cars every six months from a sepcific ford dealer). I used to have that rattle, but once i switched to synthetic, it went away... and it was only for about 1 second on start up...should i try to get them to do the 01m01 as well? If not, i'd rather leave a good running engine alone, as i don't realy trust ford techs (not their fault, it's busy, etc...)

cant the 00m12 through your engine light? I knwo i have the 00m12 thing, and it's actully at the dealership right now, i didn't reset the battery, as i'm hopping it was the intake problem adn so when i get it back, it may be off.

I also have low front brake pads, but i can't image that the wear sensor is connect to the ecu in anyway?

Help!!!!! I am at 99750 miles soon to be 100k miles

My 97 sohc truck makes a chain / clanky noise when accellerating moderately(not floored) at about 2200 to 3000 rpm range. This happens in any gear. Does this sound like the 01m01
I am having difficulty finding the exact symptoms of the problem.

Mine too. I'm not sure what it is and I hope its not the rear chain.

Tenikiwon... ford told me that the motor would have to come out to replace the rear chains.

I'm getting a rather loud 'tick, tick, tick, tick' type of knock at idle. Is that what you were experiencing and 01M01 fixed the issue?

He told me 11/03 which is 7 years from maunfacture date on my truck.

Mine was the same way, I have a '98 but was originally built in late '97. So my warranty was up before I took it in thinking that I had some time yet. I'm going to do my 00M12 fix next week myself. They won't do the 01M01 fix unless you've had the 00M12 fix first. You also have to have the symptoms of the problem before they'll do the fix as well. If you've had the 00M12 fix and haven't had the 01M01 fix, and have rattling noises which are not lifter noises or other problems, you could probably get them to do the fix.

Please post if anyone has luck getting the tensioner covered with more than 100K on their vehicles. I know my daughter brought her 97XLT in for a tensioner chain recall about 1.5 years ago.

Her's now has 105K but that's because we drove it a long ways to our home to fix some of the thousands of dollars of repairs the dealerships said it needed.

Ford replaced entire engine w/new

I got ford to not only replace the entire engine in my 1998 explorer xlt with 56k miles with a knock.
The knock was caused by the metal filings from the chain guides. I also made them pay for the rental car. It took them 5 days. I can show you reciepts from Ford and pictures of the engine. The replaced the entire engine (longblock). The reused the feul system, A/C and pulleys, etc. But I got a new engine from the heads,to the oil pan. Basically I threatened to get a lawyer because I could prove the engine was being destroyed by the metal filings form the tensioners, etc.
I would be happy to prove it to you. Just post and I will follow up.

How long ago was this? I have an appt. this wed. for them to look at mine. You're saying that because the chain was slapping around it was producing metal filings that worked their way into other parts of the engine?

Engine Replaced for 1m01m

The engine was replaced last July. I am the second owner 56k miles. The chain rubbed against the engine block because of the chain guides. Also metal freagments come from the chain guides themselves.
The only dealer who was legit in northern NJ was Hackettstown Ford in Hacketts town NJ. The replaced 7 eninges a week for the extremely damaged engines cased by the chain "cartridge". The cartridge includes the entire chain, sprocket, tensioners, etc. An engineering disaster. The new engine is perfect. I don't know what the mod was to the chain systems. Maybe the same thing will happen in 50k miles.

this **** that i hear about the SOHC 4.0 makes me never want to buy a newer Explorer with that motor,

i just hope i don't have those kinds of problems with my 95 T-bird which has the 4.6 liter SOHC

Question is how do you know the dealer really did the job?

I just got my truck back after my 2nd 00m12 and my 1st 01m01 and i expected some change in engine startup noise, harshness when driving but there was no difference in my opinion.

I you look under the hood it really doesn't look like a major job was done! Alot of untouched dust all over the motor.

Let me ask a question???

What has to be removed in order to do the 01m01?

Ex. alt/pwr strng pmp/valve covers

How can I tell?

Thanks,
Tonedog

Lots of stuff has to be taken off. Chances are they didnt do the job. The first time I took mine in they said they did 00M12 and didnt. I took it back and said I still heard noises and the next day they called me and told me they didnt hear any noise. I went down there and sure enough the noises were gone which can only mean they didnt do it the first time but when I came back they did it. They can flat rate the job without actually doing it. That's how mechanics work the system to make money.

O1M01 requires them to drop the oil pan. Take a look at those bolts. You should be able to tell if they were touched. Basically the upper and lower intake manifolds need to come off and some of the front accessories.

At least your engine still runs. I had the same stuff done at my dealer last month and my engine blew up after 7 miles. Now I have a lawyer involved because I've caught the dealership in so many lies and I've tried over a dozen times to contact the owner and no one will give him my messages because they're too scared. They know they will be in big trouble if I talk to him and tell him about all the BS that's been going on because the owner has no idea since he rarely shows his face at this dealership.

Click the first link in my sig to read my whole story.

00M12 and 01M01 should certainly take care of all noises. I would take it back and complain again.

How many miles are on your truck now? How many were on it when you first took it in for 00M12?

Goodluck!

X24, I have read your story before and I am not looking forward to following in your footsteps! It's so hard to tell if they did the work I've looked like 3 times already and can see that some stuff has finger marks on it near the front of the motor on a bracket but that's about it. I would think that all the wiring harnesses, ignition module, valve cover, among other parts would have significant evidance of handling if your telling me that up and lower intakes have got to go amoung other things!

To answer some of your questions

98' sport w/ 74335 on it under extra care warranty until 75k!

I did the 1st 00m12 around 50/55k miles

You're covered under 01M01 until 100K and since you have it on record that you were in for 00M12 while you were still covered by it, you have all the proof you need incase they try to deny you coverage if it needs that.

Motor went "clank" in the night by ToneDog

Well today I went for my first long drive (2hrs) since I got the truck back and she felt pretty good. I parked the car at my mothers place and was there for Sunday dinner (approx 6/7hrs) when it was time to leave I used my autostart to start from the window of the house and about 10min later went out for a smoke when across the street and 3 cars down the block I heard a mettalic clanking noise!!!!

I said to myself "is that me???" I went over and sure enough a lound metal knocking/clanking motor noise! So, I jumped in grabbed my digital and videotaped the noise. I got it on tape!

Now what??? I guess I have to go to the dealer and play them the tape!

I am not a happy camper!
