My friend has a 2000 Standard ZX3 Focus it has a AEM cold air intake, short throw shifter and a fart can. I have a stock V8 1998 Eddie Bauer explorer. He thinks his car is fast and will only race me in my Explorer not my 2 stangs. I figure a Mac cold air kit,75mm throttle body, shift kit, and a cat back may do it???

ya, it should do it. its not like the ###os is al that fast. i owned one when my mounty was stock.

GEARS, shift kit, camshaft and headers :)

the factory manifolds on the 5.0L ex are restrictive and those other breathing mods you listed will only get you marginal gains.

How much are the mods he listed? almost a grand if not more....
Shift kit is great bang for the buck with the 4r70w trans...

Plus as you suggested, gears, camshaft, headers.
A man needs to do whatever it takes to meet a race challange, at any cost :D
My friend has a Viper, he wants to race my trac, I will need to put my 75mm TB back on to give him a good run

Maybe he won powerball and does not care about the cost? I dunno, he just asked the question.

ON a budget? A shift kit and computer tuner will do nicely.

No grief intended, just jokein around.
If he did win that 360 mil Powerball, he could get by with modding an Ex, but he would need to budget carefully :D

Man I wish I could hit that thing......next you would see me with a team and vehicle put together to race Baja, not Foci. hahaha

sarcasim is hard to decipher through text at times, just an observation :)

Also are you sure your Ex cannot already keep up with him? Sticka potato in his tailpipe or let his tires down to 12 psi, that would be a cheap way to beat him :)

catback and an intake should do it. I raced and SVT once and I have FMS headers, true duals, mac intake, ported upper, 1'' spacer between the manifolds and pro-m maf. From a DEAD stop I would still be at his back bumper by 80. From a 30 mph roll I would pull a car by 80

Budget for me is around 1500-2000. I want to make sure I beat him or tie him or I will never hear the end of it.

wait...you are trying to spend 1500-2000 to beat a Focus?

if thats the case, get TMH headers, air intake, computer, throttle body, shift kit. that should give you a lot of power, especially with the headers cuz the stock manifolds blow A$$.

LIGHTBULB go's off
YOU JUST NEED TO GROUND YOUR EXHAUST, no brainer, race for pinkies :D

I want to be sure I beat him. He is very, very, very ****y. Did I mention he was ****y??

Add a nice ebay power chip, and add two type r stickers and he'll be pulling on SVT Cobras with ease! :D

why dont you just call him a retard for trying to race an SUV.... Hey btw, you guys think i can beat an RV in a race? ;)

For maybe 75 bux, one time deal, rig a little cheater nitrous system (easy to do)some tubing, a 50 lb nozzle, 1 lb bottle will get you 20 secs of powa, run 93 octane, pour a gallon of toulene in your gas tank, this will work, trust me.

Hmm, a 2400lb car vs a 4800 lb SUV. sounds like a nice race

2000 Focus ZX3:
Horsepower: 130 @ 6000 RPM
Torque: 135 @ 4000 RPM

1998 Explorer V8:
Horsepower: 215 @ 4200 RPM
Torque: 288 @ 3300 RPM

Sounds like it will be whoever can keep it in the powerband better. However, once curves are involved, I KNOW who would win.
