Does anyone know what oil i should use to change my oil in my 92 xlt? I heard I can get better gas mileage out of some oil brands then other? any help is appreciated thanks.
I have had good results with the Quaker State synthectic 4X4 oil.
Its a bit pricey but it maintains a nice honey color until the next scheduled change, the previous oils Ive used where usually black...

I've always gotten good service from Valvoline. Always well over 100,000 miles and no engine problems and good oil pressure. This is on several cars and trucks through the years and I've traded or sold them and they were in great running condition every time.
Of course, it's pretty well established that the synthetics such as Mobil-1 or Valvoline Syn-tec are superior to regular oils. They are reported to run cleaner and last longer, so if you can afford them, they're supposed to be the best...
Someone told me once though, that if you have been running a long time/lot of miles with conventional oil, and then switch to synthetic oil, leaks can show up. I'm not sure why, unless maybe they clean away sludge that was plugging a hole. Not really sure about this, but it is one reason I've been hestitant to switch!
Regardless of brand or type of oil, with winter coming up be sure to use 5W-30 or at the very least 10W-30 weight to reduce the load and enhance initial engine lubrication on cold starts.
I have recently used Quaker State 4X4 Synthetic blend 10W-30 and it held up pretty good but when I changed it I put in Valvoline Durablend 5W-30. Boy, you wouldn't think so but it made a very noticable diffrence. It gave me a touch more power and the engine ran smoother. I just changed it and now I am trying Castrol Syntec blend 5W-30, it seems to be about the same as the Valvoline. By the way this was in a '93 XLT.
The best deal I've found on Synthetic's is @ K-mart. Castrol Syntec (sp) in a 5 qt jug for $15.99. I had to buy a few to stock up on. Plus you can dump the old oil right back in the jug. (w/ a funnel of course)

The keys on oil are to use synthetic and a Mobil 1 or K&N filter. Both filter down to 10-20 microns. It will take about 3-3000 mile changes before all the junk will be filtered out of the engine. Synthetic oils are heavy on detergents and don't leave sludge. My last oil change was at a 6000 interval in a quick lube place. A tech came out and told me I must have made a mileage mistake because my oil was so clean.
Interesting that I saw this today. My Autoshop teacher today said if you have been running your car on normal oil then switch to penzoil or any othe synthetic then the oil will clean away sludge, but then the sludge will clog holes in the oil passage ways and cause you to blow your engine. He said if you started out right from the dealer running synthetic oil that it will be better for the engine but not if you use cheap stuff then switch over.

Oh, and by the way he also said that the ford motorcraft (I think thats what it is) oil was rated one of the best oils you can get.
You could also try a synthetic oil called
"Royal Purple." I have a '94 Navajo, Auto, 79K miles. This stuff is great. Besides the fact that it is purple like Barney, this stuff really works. It cost a bit, but the rewards are great.
I've used Mobil 1 on my '91 since my very first oil change then switched to Castrol Sytec. I'm trying Mobil 1 again to see if there were any improvements. I personally don't notice that much difference between the two. About the color, I was always under the assumption if the oil turned color that it was doing its job by removing gunk from your engine. Maybe someone has a good explaination for this. I believe the function of oil is not only as a lubricant but also as a cleaner. So, although syntheics might have an advantage in lubricating over conventional oil, its most important to change it at its schduled period along with the filter no matter what you use.
I too have always used Mobil 1 5W30 in my 1991 -- right from the first oil change. I always change it at 3000 miles, and I always put a new Fram filter on it. I have 144,000 mile on it now, and it runs just like it did when it was new. I have never had to add any oil between changes, and the oil pressure is still where it was when the engine was new. I'd say this combination is pretty hard to beat!
I've seen comments on this board about oil filters. I recall someone recommending not to use Fram oil filters. I asked why, but I never saw a reply. I'd like someone to fill me in. I've had great luck with them.
I've got to agree with velcrofly in that a 5 quart jug of Castrol Syntec from K-mart is the cheapest and easiest way to buy synthetics (I learned that from this site a while back Dead Link Removed). I use the Syntec with a Mobile 1 filter and change the oil at 5000 miles. Oil comes out a darker shade of brown, but still increadibly clean. The first time I changed it after switching from conventional oil and filter I thought I had made a mistake and changed it too early, but my records confirmed that the time was right. I am very happy with the results.

1991 XLT, 160,000 km....I have also used synthetic oil since the break-in period of the engine. I have used Mobil-1, Castrol and Imperial Oil (Esso). I went back to Mobil-1 this oil change ($5.00 more than Imperial) and I have noticed that the engine runs a little smoother. I have never had to add any oil between changes (5,000 km) and the oild pressure is fine (knock on wood). And I have used Fram oil filters with no problems.
And dirty oil is oil doing a good job. Dead Link Removed
