Hello all,
Newbie here. I have a 99 mountaineer im using as a parts truck to build my 02 ranger. Im swapping the 5.0 engine into the ranger and want to know what tcase i need thatll work with the mountaineer transmission. I was told to check out advanced adapters so i did. They are 500.00 plus and i have to replace my outputshaft of the transmission to make it fit original ranger transfercase. That seems like the hard way to go. What parts will i need. Thanks in advance. Below is vin numbers to donor vehicle and the project truck
Mountaineer donor: 4M2DU55POXUJ13923
Ranger Build: 1FTZR45E72PB40288

Or you could use the AWD case that was on the donor trans.

That's how I would do it, but people really like to only replace one or two tires at a time, which ruins real AWD TC's.

I've priced 302 swaps lately, not used high mileage 302's, but a rebuilt or 347 build, and the costs are actually more than a late V6 swap would be, if it could be done. The engine bay of the older cars is much different than a 2010, 15, or 2018 Ford with the several V6 choices.

I'm hoping to get a spare SUV(my 99 most likely) that I don't need to drive, and sell off the SOHC and 5R trans. I'd be willing to buy a used 3.7 from a 2018ish Mustang, F150, or Transit van etc, to see how tight the fit would be. If the engine could fit, the 6R80 trans is super strong, and I'd make it take an AWD TC. The late V6's make nearly 50% more power than a stock 302, and fuel mileage would be 25% higher or more.

I wish someone with extra time on their hands would try that, for me it would after many others I have already planned for. I can see the cost being $4-$5k, while a rebuilt 302 alone can be over $2500.

You need a TC that bolts to the new trans. Any BW4404 or 4403 will work, those AWD are the smallest TC that work. But those do require equal tires at all times. The BW4406 is a great big and strong TC, that's the one lots of people really like for heavy duty and off road use. Most everything else will require custom parts or high dollar kit parts.

Most 5.0 Rangers we build use the 4406 electric shift or 4406 manual shift transfer case

I am not a fan of the explorers AWD system, it eats fuel mileage, wears heavy on front end parts and tires. Also you are FULL TIME AWD with most of the power going to the rear axle.
With the 4406 you can have a true 2wd, 4hi, 4 low t case

I decided with all the troubles of converting and fitting etc that ill rebuild the 4r70w with the Advanced Adapters outputshaft and tail housing since this is primarily a road queen and i want fuel economy too so awd was out from beginning.

I did that too back in 2005
My bronco II uses the 1354 Ranger transfer case with AA shorty tailhousing and output shaft
It is a pretty nice setup, however I am stuck with this transmission and the transmission is now custom with the custom AA parts
The adapter itself was over $600 and the rebuild was $1800, and I have already had to rebuild it once again.
It is a good setup
Years later I would learn about the F150 t case, the 4406. Now I use those, no custom parts, no custom transmission
You can also bolt up a Ford NP205 t case, I have used that one too
