Just about any A4LD from '91 to '94 behind a 4.0 will be a direct replacement (Explore Ranger and Aerostar are your main model choices). Recognize that, as a transmission with a reputation for being "weak", there were small internal improvements over the years, so an A4LD built for the '94 model year (or rebuilt later to '94 4.0 specs) is a little better than the earlier model year versions.
A4LD's fit to the 2.9 L ('88 and later, to get the 2 solenoid version) engine will also bolt in behind a 4.0, but the 2.9 L versions were built to weaker specs than the 4.0 versions. Again, if you know it has been rebuilt to 4.0 specs, it will work well as a replacement. If you cannot be certain of its rebuild history, then it becomes a bit more risky. If you go with a 2.9 L version, the usual advice would be to have it rebuilt to 4.0 specs before installing. One asking this question is usually trying to avoid the rebuild altogether, so this would usually not be desirable.
