What is actually involved in a Dyno Test? How long does it take? What are various prices? What do you get ( printouts, etc )? How is the speed/rpm run up?

Thanks…..

Most dyno facilities charge from $65 - $125 for 2-3 dyno pulls. You usually get a print out of your best run, or all of them on the same sheet. It takes around 10 minutes to strap the car down, and another 5-10 to run the car on the dyno.

If you have 2wd, they strap your car down with the drive wheels on the rollers. Most of the time the dyno operators are the ones running your car on the dyno, and you just get to watch. If it's an automatic, they then manually lock the car in 2nd gear, or drive it up to about 3000rpm's in 3rd. You have to do this so the car won't downshift when you go to WOT.

Once in gear and set, you push the pedal to the floor and run the car up to redline. The dyno operator records data during that time.

If you have AWD or full time 4WD, you have to find a special dyno to run at.

After it's done, you get a printout of HP and torque VS engine RPM's. In many cases, you also get air/fuel at the bottom. Here's a sample dyno chart from a V6 Thunderbird earlier this week. You can see the bottom line is the air/fuel ratio. This partiular car was running lean on that pull.

that graph looks really crisp, do you run a dyno facility?

I don't own the facility, but I do tuning there 2-4 times a week. Dynojet makes a windows viewer to electonically save and view your dyno runs, but I just use the scanner on my PC.

that printout looks very smooth as well.. mine looks like a mountain range.

dyno tests all in all take about 20 minutes. and cost $75-$100 to do.. the owner of the shop usually drives.. for insurance purposes.. he just drives up on the dyno and does his think, prints it out and yer through.

Hey Aldive, Since you live in Fl. , you must bring your truck over to the Daytona speedway for your test. If you don't like it ,you can appeal, but it won't do you any good. Hey everybody , the Turkey rod run is at the end of the month. Mike

I think I remember him saying that pull was from the last gen S/C Thunderbird which was very easy to mod.

yeah, there easy to mod, but thats still double the stock and the stock rating already has a power adder like you said. those are good numbers

yeh they definitley had to do a lot more than a pully swap, thats like almost 200hp more and 200ft of torque more than what they put out stock. I want to know what they did to it to get that amount of power, that car has to haul! Definitley a sleeper, I bet the guy in the Ferrari would be pretty embaressed to have his doors blown off by a thunderbird:D

those numbers are actually detuned. It was running so lean I pulled 5 degrees of spark, it made almost 500RWTQ running lean before I removed all the timing. We think that he has maxed out the stock fuel rail, because it just isn't getting fuel.

That car was a 90 Super Coupe, he is now the second highest HP Tbird V6 I know of. It's stroked to 4.1L, he's running a ported M90 supercharger, custom intercooler, a .600 lift cam, highly ported/welded heads, and about every bolt-on you could imagine. I've helped a few local SC's break past 300RWHP, but this guy really went all out. As soon as he gets some fuel to that engine, it will easily blow past 400RWHP.

The best part is the owner daily drives this car :)
