Wanting an Explorer
I'm going to be getting either a 91-94 Explorer within the next 6 months. The reason for those years is cuz I'm going to be putting the Perry's conversion kit on the front that changes it to a 97 front end. Eventually it's gonna become a nice prerunner. So I was just wondering, out of those years (91-94), is there one engine that has a significant difference in performance with either the V8 or the V6? Thanks.:cool:

Sorry.. but V8s didnt come out till '96.

Uh, the '93-'94s had like 5 more HP than the '91-'92s, didn't they? Don't know about the torque...

ummmm, theres ony one engine until 96' and that was the ohv V6. After 96' was the 5.0, sohc V6 and ohv V6, and the 02's have the sohc V8 and V6. Kinda confused by your question? Did you think a V8 was available in the 1st gen??

I was alwasy wondering why the earlier ones had 155 and then it went to 160, what was so different?

Maybe a ricer put on a sticker? :p Haha, sorry, couldn't resist...

If you're building a prerunner a 95+ might be a better option with the IFS. Also, they you wouldn't have to convert the frontend ;) You can get a 96+ 5.0 with AWD or 2wd which would both be good for prerunning.

Yeah, I had no idea the factory V8 didn't come out until then. Damn!:mad:

If I had the money I would go with a newer year with A arms. But it takes so much more work and money to get as much suspension travel out of A arms compared to I beams. Thanks for the idea though. I'll keep it in mind.

BTW, thanks for all the quick replys everybody.:D

Wait, the pre 96 ohv V6 engine was a 4.0 liter right? God this is confusing!:eek:

Yes. What is so confusing about it?

I don't know the exact weight specs but a case could possibly be made for the 4.0 based on weight alone. Again, I don't know the exact numbers but I believe the v8 doesn't have that much better perf numbers. And the extra weight might not be good for pre running. Anybody support this iead?

4.0 = very slow, 5.0 = go;)
My 94' did 0-60 at 10.5 seconds and the quarter in the high 17's with the mods now it takes about 9.8 seconds to 60.

Our 5.0 Mounty will do 0-60 in 8 seconds flat and the quarter at 16.2.

Thats not a big differance to you? In the Mounty I'll take civics and integras like their nothing and burn them (unless they have some serious mods; nos, turbo ect.), in the 94 ummmm. they beat me:(

The other advantage to the 5.0 over the 4.0 is availability of aftermarket parts. There are TONS available for the 5.0 and only a limited amount for the OHC 4.0 and an extremely limited amount for the SOHC 4.0

alright, quick rundown:

OHV 4.0 V6, 91-99?, 160 hp/225 tq
SOHC 4.0 V6, 97+, 205-210 hp, ? tq
5.0 V8, 96-2001, ~210 hp, lots of tq ;)

The SOHC is generally faster than the V8, but the V8 can out-tow the SOHC, has many many more parts, and is in general more reliable (as is the tranny). It is heavier though by a few hundred pounds, which can make a difference in prerunning.

The torque on the sohc was between 240-250 depending on what horspower engine you had. The 205hp had about 250 torque and the 210 had about 240 torque, add 5hp to lose 10lbft of torque? go figure.

So far I havn't lost to a sport or 4dr w/ the sohc, all they see is my tailights, but if I'm in the 94' all I see is theirs:( The sohc pulls good but only at high rpms, it does have a better growl to it than every other V6 suv save for the 3.0 X5.

the tq / hp swap is probably due to exhaust. like when i got my headers i lost some low end but gained on the hwy.

can you guys clear something up for me

SOHC = Single OverHead Cam ????
DOHC = Dual OverHead Cam ????
OHV = ???????????????

Am I right on any of those??

Ryan

OHV stands for overhead valve. Practically all car engines are OHV though.

Thanks

Ryan

Since X's and Rangers are so much alike, do 94 and below Rangers come with OHV 4.0 V6's? If so, do they suck just as much or does the weight difference compensate?

Rangers are so much lighter that a Ranger with a 4.0 can really move.
