My 99 rear bumper has a large hole in it, right in the center, with a plastic plug. What is the hole for? It doesn't look substantial enough to tow anything, but must be there for a reason...

It's for a tow ball. Most people just buy a frame-mounted hitch, since it's much stronger than the bumper.

It actually is for towing.

I've towed a '73 Ford Maverick with a tow dolly and a ball on that hole all the way from NJ to DC - stupid idea :D

What? You mean it wasn't for flowers ? I always put flowers in mine.

If you do tow a flower in that hole make sure you add a tranny cooler. :D

No, its for converting your bumper into a V shape. You simply attach any trailer, and depending on if you want an outward or inward V you apply gas or brake to achieve either. I’ve seen other people use this with great success. However, if not properly done, you may destroy the bumper entirely.;)

Actually, mine comes with a tranny cooler from the factory.

I use synthetic flowers because they're lighter and they last longer. I think it saves me about 2 mpg or so.
