What's this part ? Explorer 98 ohv

The IAC controls idle air, and over time gets a little gummed up(sticks). Simply R&R that and gently cleaning it with brake or carb cleaner often improves the idle. Don't spray a lot inside the end where the solenoid is, that has a rubber diaphragm in it.

Here's an excellent cut away of the IAC Valve that @J_C recently posted to the forum

Use the search feature to find many well documented write ups on how to clean your IAC Valve.

The area you clean is basically where the black plastic disc seats - it's between the air flow inlet/outlet area.

Carbon builds up inside the valve body and that causes the black plastic disc to not properly seat.

Also, the vent filter clogs with find dust and eventually needs to be opened up and cleaned.

A non-working EGR valve IS a problem IF the valve is stuck OPEN. An EGR valve that is stuck open lets exhaust gasses into the engine crankcase when the engine is cold. This floods the engine with exhaust gas particulates that the engine oil has to deal with. This will greatly impact the engine oil quality and viscosity in a fairly short period of time. The engine oil becomes contaminated and increases in viscosity (becomes thicker). I speak from experience in doing regular engine oil analysis samples on my 1993 Ford Explorer.
