hello there, the outher day i noticed some movement in the left rear side of my 97 explorer, i jacked it up and i could move the tire and hub in and out maybe about a 3/16th, i did not put a dial indicator on it but i can, so i jacked up the outher side of the truck and the right side is the same, i was wondering if there is suppost to be the play in there or is there an ajustment or is both bearing shot, both wheels move in and out but i have no up and down movement or side to side, just in and out

also i was wondering if there is a way to shut of the Auto
4X4 off so it stays in 2wd i had put my mud tires on and it was nothing but problems, it keep trying to go into 4x4 and would just be awful driving down the road every thing would bind up, so i had to go back to my old stock tires,

anyways thank you very much and any help is highley thanked

It's possible that your hubs are shot (they are not adjustable, they need to be replaced if they are shot), but you should isolate where the movement is first. Check the hubs and the balljoints, as both are possible suspects.

Yes you can shut off the Auto 4x4. Check out the "Stickies" section at the top of the Transmission & Transfer case section of the site. There is information there on how to do it. It's called the "Brown Wire Modification".

thanks, i found the mod to shut that down,
but my movement on the hub is on the rear hubs not the front,

i just replaced the front hubs, easy job but not cheep haha

Rear wheels will have a little in-and-out movement. That's normal.

thanks i had had a nose when i was driveing so i pulled it apart today and found the e-brake retaining pin and retainer had fallen out and that was what i was hereing
