I would hate to have to mount those tires on those rims! Yikes!
Oil changes would be easier though. lol

CDW6212R,
I didn't even consider rear lateral movement, thanks for bringing that up.

The moment you put any tire on the back a hair wider, it will rub on the parking brake cable. So begin there and tie wrap that cable away more. The V8 trucks have the extra rear suspension links, and I R&R'd the left one and routed the cable on the other side of it. That makes a good 2" of extra room.

I hope maybe to install a panhard bar if I can manage that. But 275mm isn't a massive tire, so that might fit without such an extreme change.

Ever think about 20's?

the one bad thing about 20's is there is a lot of rolling mass to get it off the line, and keep them going. im not even going to get into how much more fun they are to try and stop.

That explorer has a nice stance, is it yours?
I might go with 18's, They come in 18x10 for the back which would be easier to find a tire for than a 10.5, They are deep dish and have an offset of 22 (mm I think).
The front would be 18x9 with offset of 24
I don't know if there would be clearance problems or if I can find the right size tires yet, still researching.

Hub size

Does anyone know the hub size on a 2nd gen Explorer?

Hub size

Just when you think things might make sense... lol.

The ones I am looking at are 70.6mm
I would like to know what stock size is.

Yeah its mine but that was several years ago. I'm in the process of doing a sas on it now.

Good luck, that sounds like a lot of work! All worth it in the end though.

First off, been reading your build threads, don't remember seeing a side pic of your truck-It is Clean! Regarding moldings, yes yours are wider than the base sport moldings (wider moldings were grey, thinner moldings were black). I run 275/55/17's on my other SUV on a 17x9 wheel, pretty beefy, but only 28.9" tall. A 275/60/17 would be 30" tall and closer to your stock size. I wanted to go with a staggered wheel package but couldn't find anything remotely affordable in 17's that fit my truck @ the time.

Thanks GRNMACHINE,
It's a good 10 footer, lol. Looks good from 10ft away.
The paint is rather interesting, it looks green sometimes and other times blue-ish.

I found this tire size thing on the web, has all different tire size to inches tall.

One Problem is trying to find staggered tires that have the same diameter front and back so it doesn't mess with the automatic 4wd speed sensors and clutches. Another is trying to figure out if I want 17's or 18's and also trying to keep weight down. I was looking at these below because 18's come in 10inch wide deep dish instead of 10.5, trying to find wide enough tires that are still tall is proving to be challenging.

I need to find a local place that will try the wheel/tire combo on so I can see it. I would hate to spend the money on wheels and tires only to be disappointed.

Late response, I really like those wheels and the staggered look. Finding a local place to test fit is not that easy, a lot of places say once they mount the tire they cannot sell it as new.... Always good to get to know the manager or owner. The big chains wont even mount anything other than stock due to the Firestone tire blowout lawsuit. I always bring in my wheels and have them mounted and then install them at home.....and then grind or cut to fit....

shops

Good point. I forgot how touchy all the shops became after that fiasco.
Maybe I will find something at the junkyard or on eBay one day that will look all ugly messed up but work as a test fit wheel. I am in no hurry yet.

current wheels

How well have your current wheels held up considering the amount of racing you're doing. I need to purchase 16 inch or larger wheels before I can upgrade my spindles and I like the stock look of your wheels. As I recall you purchased those at a salvage yard and posted they were around 13 lbs lighter than your stock steel wheels. I don't need wide wheels for my modest power and street driving. I've been delaying my brake upgrade because there is still a lot of tread left on my 15 inch tires.

Stock Wheels

My stock wheels are holding up fine under all the abuse I put them through.
No problems with them at all as far as function. I just put two tires on them due to dry rot / cracking. Two were from 2000/1 (14-15 years old)

Now there are some scratches and peeling clear coat or whatever they put on them. Just cosmetic though.
If you get used ones make sure the bead where the tire seats, is good and clean and free from corrosion.

You will like how light they are compared to the heavy steel ones.

I have a set of those nice 16" tear drop wheels, I bought in 2003 just before deciding to try the Cobra wheels I had long before unused. I'd like to sell them some day.

Lots of OEM wheels are relatively light weight compared to cheap aftermarket stuff. I got these for $300 and then wheel caps a while later to make them complete. I've moved to the bigger wheels and have had dedicated snow wheels/tires since then.

The stock 15" steel wheel/tires were about 53lbs, the 17" Cobra wheels and 255/60 tires were about 58lbs. My first 18's were 1.5" taller and weighed 72.5lbs, which really hurt performance. I've moved down in tire size, which brought the weight down(I think I'm around 65lbs or so now). The used 17x9" GTC wheels I just found are 22lbs each, and the 29" tires I'm planning on should be no more than 36lbs, so a final of 58lbs or less, a good goal.
