OK, ive been calling parts stores and wrecking yards all day. where can i get a fuel pressure regulator for this thing? 1997 explorer sport, sohc. the local dealer has a newer setup that replaces it and the fuel rail. they want $600. the problem isthat this thing is about the size of a quarter and maybe an inch and a half long. i coulnt sleep at night if i payed that much. anyone out there been thru this that can point me in the right direction?

car wont start so im hoping to figure this out quickly. Thanks

Check the fuel pressure first, the regulator rarely ever fails. You should have 35-40 psi or so at all times in the pre 99 Fords.

ive been chasing this for a while, im pretty sure thats my problem. bigger problem though is that any wrecking yards that have the part tell me,"we dont sell those kinds of parts' then hang up before i can explain anything. (or talk them into helping me) ive found lots of them for ohv motors. cant find them for a sohc motor, thats the problem.

ive got zero pressure at the schrader valve, just replaced the pump.

if i hold the valve open it will squirt out, has good volume

the regulator is stuck open, allowing the fuel to go right back out the return line.sound right? if anyone has any other ideas please share. tomorrow i will pull the return line loose and confirm that this is what is happening

definatley runs. if i hold the schrader valve open it makes a shower

That's how I would call it too. I wonder if anyone here with a 97/98 SOHC might have the part as a spare.

BrooklynBay How could you not get a pressure reading at the test port if it's able to shoot gasoline? Are you using the correct fuel test gauge?

thats why i think the regulator is bad. it allows the pressure to bleed back to the tank via the return line

what if you just went to a you pull it junk yard and go in and take it off yourself so the junkyard cant say, we dont sell that part, you already have it in your hand ready to pay for it

i would, but the only yard near me that has anything newish pulls the parts for you. they are hard to deal with. i wont usually call them till its the last resort. even that didnt work out

where should i post to see if anyone does? i didnt see a section for it. probly real obvious but i didnt see it

i can borrow a gauge, however i already know that there is no pressure. i can press the schrader valve and i get maybe a tablespoon of gas out

ya i can borrow one, but its not gonna do me any good till i get the truck fixed. it doesnt build any pressure in the fuel line. the way i understand it, the regulator controls the flow back to the tank to control the pressure. so when the pressure drops the regulator closes to build more pressure. when the pressure gets too high, it opens and returns fuel to the tank to relieve the pressure. im fairly certain that it is stuck open, causing the fuel to run thru the rail, but immediately return to the tank causing the pressure to drop before it even rises. if my understanding is incorrect, by all means correct me. i appreciate the help guys.

The regulator has a vacuum line on the top of it. The pressure will increase slightly if it's unplugged. You could try this to see if there is any change. A bad regulator will have a torn diaphragm, and will leak gasoline into the vacuum line.

there is no pressure. zero. thats when you turn the key on. theres no vacuum on the line till you start it anyway, so uhooking it shouldnt make any difference at all, i tried it yesterday with these results. as for the torn diaphram, im pretty sure what has happened is that it is stuck open. this has been an intermittent problem till now. a torn diaphram would just be the end of it, not just work when it wants.

Check with Karl here, he sells Explorer parts. I don't know if he has engine parts like that, but he is a sponsor listed on the main forum page, "Kubiak." Regards,
