where does this connector go?

If this is in deed the fuel rail pressure and temp sensor vaccumm line it could be throwing your codes. Have you tried switching coil pack with another cylinder? I'd assume you could do the same with injectors but I've never messed with fuel injectors.

I did replace "coil pack A" (number cylinder I presume?) because I happened to have a spare new one, but I'll do what you suggest with the fuel injectors.

Sorry if I might sound inexperienced, I've been working on cars 25 years rebuilding engines and all that good stuff on older ones, but I've never had to miss much with electronic engine control

No problem man I'm not an experienced mechanic by any means just like to do my own work. You can just swap the coils around you don't actually have to get a new one. If the new one is still showing a code after resetting cel than you know it's not the coil pack. If you were to swap it to a different cylinder and got a code on that cylinder you would know it's the coil pack. I presume you can do the same with the injectors. Watch the YouTube video it's 25 minutes but he walks you through entire manifold replacement procedure. He also has a lot of good how to videos for explorers.

Cool. Yeah, I only like doing work on my own vehicle and I'm pretty good at it. People are always asking me to do work on their cars and, other than my girlfriend's car, I take a pass. I'll check into that but I'll have to wait till later to test it when I can get a jump because my battery is kind of dead.

The truck was running decently before I took it apart, it just had a rough idle which tipped me off 2 coolant in the number 5 spark plug well, which tipped me off to it being a cracked intake manifold. Hopefully the spark plug malfunction is just the coil at worst because if not it's going to be a pain figuring out what else it might be.

Check then recheck your wiring. Make sure you have the right connectors going to the right injectors and coils. What codes are you pulling. I would thing you would get a misfire code which would point to the exact cylinder you need to diagnose. You positive the code you pulled is coil pack a malfunction and not solenoid A malfunction?

Yes, but Hayes shows possible codes for coils A-H, so that's gotta be 1-8.

Also if you have a multimeter you can test for appropriate resistance. Not recommended but you could pull the wiring from each coil independently while engine is running and see how it effects the engine. This would be a last resort as it can be dangerous unsafe for engine.

Any idea what the appropriate resistance is? I actually tried looking it up i Hayes recently and couldn't find it.

I don't think there is a set resistance you need to see if the switching signal is operating correctly. I have to open the hood here in a few and I have a multimeter so I can update my findings.

Thanks. Please let me know what you find out. I read your link and it was pretty interesting. Again, though, I'm still not sure that "coil pack A" is cylinder number 1 but it's almost got to be.

OK so we're looking at the first coil closest to bumper on passenger side. Take that coil and swap it with one on passenger side reset your cel and see if it kicks back on so we can eliminate the coil being the issue.

Yep that's my plan. I'll let you know this I'll let you know this evening.
