Greetings everyone, checking all these posts it seems like homecoming to all the work I've done on this explorer.I'll apologize in advance for the length of this post.
Where do I start? Beginning or end. I guess I'll start at the end. Was driving back up from Orange County 1:15am, went to exit, the '91EB4X4auto 187kmi Explorer just died, cruised to a stop, couldn't get it started, acted like a battery problem ie. slow turn over, dim lights(earlier in the day noticed slight whine in transmission on load in 2nd). Popped the hood, noticed the radiator/cap was off, fluid everywhere, re-filled radiator, general inspection, tried to start again. After much labor, she started, dropped her into gear, nothing. No drive no reverse. Called AAA.
Oil level OK, trans level OK but fluid is burnt, all wires and hoses seem to be ok. I have an add-on called a fuel saver ( it bubbles platinum into the engine via the pcv valve). It's been on for 3years squeaking out more torque, more mpg (3-4) and better perfomance overall.
Anyway in the almost five years I've been maintaining My girlfriend's Explorer I've replaced power steering pump/hoses, O2 sensor, Cat. converter, TPS sensor, Pplugs/wires, shocks, springs, radius arm bushings, of course brakes oil etc, I Had the trans filter and fluid changed by Tire Station less than a year ago, a week or two later the trans slipped out of gear and wouldn't engage forward or reverse. It was cold and I had to shut down the engine and wait for five minutes before I could get it to engage again. I checked the fluid level while I waited and it was about a pint over. I took it back to them they removed the extra, and said this wouldn't happen again. Well it did, not a lot, but once a month or so. I took it to them again and one of the mechanics said "it's old you gotta expect some quirks".Well this is a lot more than a Quirk in my book,
My girlfriend wants to give this vehicle to her daughter and her husband, (not mech. inclined and little to no money to spend) on the 26th of March. But before that even gets close to happenning I've got to get it going,( it quit while I was using it, feel a certain amount of responsability there. I don't have the money for a rebuild or a good tranny guy to take it to.( I tried calling that Doug"s Transmissions 480-288-0043, or 480-964-3832 somebody posted in Nov last year. Either his number changed or he's moved (not aworking # on the 1st, no answer on the 2nd)
So I know minimally I'm going to have to change the fluid- filter, and from the posts I'll have to check the tort converter, check the vacuum modulater, and check the governor in the tail shaft. I I would like a step-by-step procedure or confirmation if anyone has mind to do so.

Again, I apologize for the length of his post, and want to thank everyone in advance for their time and energy. I'm coming to youall because I believe in learning from others experience to lessen the chances of making mistakes. God bless you all and this WebSite.
Thanks Again,

JerBear,
Welcome to the most informative Explorer site on the web. You can find answers to nearly any Explorer related question here.

I would have to guess that your tranny is shot. They are very sensitive to heat and the lack of coolant in the radiator probably did it in because the tranny lines go to a seperate area of the radiator to cool the fluid before it returns to the tranny.

I would wonder what caused the cap to be popped off in the first place. Did the engine show any sign of overheating? It is possible that the thermostat stuck and it may have caused it to do that.

About the tranny fluid level, is it increasing on its own or is this only after the fluid is replaced? If it is increasing without changing it, it may be possible that the torque converter may be trying to stop up and not let as much into it (only a guess). Does the fluid look milky? If so, possibly a line leaking inside the radiator and letting water in the fluid. Again, only a guess but maybe it will get some other comments started and give other possible answers.

The slow cranking speed could be from it overheating. When an engine gets so hot, the internal components tend to swell up more than normal and can cause an engine to try to seize up.

About your "fuel saver", is the solution that is in it kind of a bluish color? If so, I tried that on an 86 Caravan about 5 years ago and did not see any increase in fuel economy at all. I wanted to put it on my Maxima back then, but when I talked to the people who made it,(by phone), they said the Maxima was already as fuel efficient as it could be but I should see a definite improvement in the van. After a month or so of trying it without seeing any difference in economy, I returned it for a refund. They did in fact refund my money but it took much longer to get the refund than what it did to receive the product.

Good luck.

Ira,
Thanks for the quick reply. Please pray its not totally shot. Sure can't afford to rebuild her. My girlfriend said it was rebuilt at 120k. Sure would of thought the convertor would have been updated and it all it would last longer than this.
It's really wierd that the engine got that hot because I'm an avid guage watcher and i did not notice any raise in temp. even when I went to restart it before I new the cap popped off the guage was at 1/4-1/3 deflection well within the limits.
As far as the fluid level goes it wasa pint over, only the one time after having filter replaced (I believe that the guys at Tire Station overfilled it). The fluid color was only dark brown just burnt, no milk or foam.
The solution base is a bluish color.Sounds like the same stuff you had I'm sorry you did not see any results, but glad you got your money back!
Any thoughts as to what I should try first. Thanks again for your time and effort, it's well apreciated.
God bless, and keep all Explorers running well

JerBear,
If your engine starts up and runs OK now, I would not think there was any damage done to it. Your tranny is another problem. They are very prone to damage from overheating. If I had to make a guess, I would say it is probably toast. I don't really have a miracle cure for you. If I said to change your tranny fluid, I don't believe this would help but just add more to the cost by throwing this money down the drain. I guess all I could say is just to take it to a good transmission shop and see what they have to say. If it is the tranny, be ready to spend a lot of money. Another possiblility is to look for a used one with a warranty. Either way, it is not going to be cheap.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Good luck anyway.

JerBear,

Sorry to hear your tranny has gone south on you. I ran across this website with cheap($575) A4LD rebuilt tranny's on it and thought I'd let you know about it. I haven't bought anything from them and haven't heard if anyone else has so you'd be taking a risk by trying them. Anyway, their website is http://www.phoenixhardparts.com

I'm sure if you do the R&R(remove n replace) on it you'd save yourself some big $'s, but you'd earn it too.

Good luck.

Drew
