Im acually not a explorer guy im driving a Jeep cherokee at the moment but im looking for a ford explorer 8.8 for my heep. Ive got 4.10s already but i want to swap out my Dana 35 REAR diff for a Ford Explorer 8.8. My question is which explorers came factory with 4.10's. I want to know what to keep my eyes open for.

you'll have to check the codes on the doors or the axel its self. the sohc models will be paired with the higher ratios since they make their power in higher revs.

A lot of the Sports came with them it seems like.

Ive read about the codes like D2 and 42 and such, Would those be in the drivers side door?

Yes, the code is on the sticker on the drivers door. My 97 Sport has 4.10 diffs.. I think the ones which came with the 16" wheels usually have 4.10s.

worse come to wrose, remove the pumpkin cover and try to count. Divide ring gear teeth by pinion gear teeth.

Axle codes on the inside door panel

41 - 3.27 non-limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
45 - 3.55 non-limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
46 - 3.73 non-limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
42 - 4.10 non-limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
D1 - 3.27 limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
D4 - 3.73 limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
D2 - 4.10 limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)

Any year explorer is what you want, Ranger and Bronco II axles are 27 spline (1/2 ton, bascially a Dana35) i do believe some Bronco II's came with 31 spline? not sure about that.

1991-1992 are RABS (not sure how much difference thats going to make for you)

heres a picture comparing the 8.8 and d35 standard rotation

now we can see why you Jeep guys like our axles so much! haha kidding.

any help?

Also, the late model Rangers with the FX4 Level-II package *should* have the 32-spline 8.8 if'n you're interested.

Also, get 4 of the "space saver" spare tires that run 60 psi. That should be good for 1 or 2 mpg. Added side benefit is that you can only go about 50 mph, so you save that way too. :D

Cool, I love the comparision thing with the D35 and 8.8. Ill check out the stickers on the door jams next time im out at the wreaker. Cherokees are lighter then Yjs i do beleive do to the unibody. 60 PSI is for kids i was running dounut tires from a k-car at 100PSI, Baby rode like a caddy

A Jeep guy... :shoot: :p

Good luck on the search and welcom to the site.

:D Thanks for all the info guys

Mine is not a sport, but it is a 4 door with the "sport package". Don't just look for sports (2 doors).

It has the 16" wheels, plus the D2 (4.10 trac lock) 8.8 rear axle.
