I have a 2nd gen 5.0l and am going to 32's. I would like better acceleration and towing so im gonna swap out the gears. Im in between 4.10's and 4.56's, at about 70 mph what are the rpm's for both ratio's? And how much better will the acceleration be with either?

4.10 if you're sure you're not going to have larger tires in the future. If you are, go ahead and get 4.56.

you have overdrive. if your going to bother with an expensive gear swap, do one that you will notice. get the 4.56's.

go big or go home! :)

if your off road, you can't have too low of gears. the ONLY disadvantage to lower gears (higher numerically) is slightly higher freeway cruise RPM.. everything else is performance gain.

also if our towing, the lower gear ratio will reduce torque through the transmission, get you out of your torque converter sooner, etc.. for towing, 4.56's for sure.

I have done some calculations and with 4.10's @ 65 mph I should be at 2024 rpm with 31 inch tires.
With 4.56's @ 65 mph I should be at 2295 rpm with 31's. If im only at about 2300 rpm then 4.56's would be reasonable. Does this seem about right?

IMO 410's is the choice. I went from 31's to 33"s, swapped to 410s and the truck was the same.

If you are going to use a 4406 tansfer case, you'l get low range which will give you the grunt.

I think 456's will cause your economy to suffer greatly.

the down-side of 33's and 4.10's, at least for me, was highway driving it kept having to kick out of overdrive, when I had my cruise control on at ~68mph. Not-so-flat highway up here. The ever-so-slightest incline would cause it to downshift.

With 4.56's, it only has to kick out of O/D on the couple steep hills, and I usually just turn off O/D myself.

The thing is I want to get a bit more power for street driving as well. I am going to do the BW 4406 swap pretty soon, probably before the gears.

well me personally, I'm happier with 4.56's (although the wallet isn't).
but, my 33" tires actually measure a bit over 33"
some 32's have an actual measurement of as low as ~31.3" I believe I've seen.

We're missing some info.

How heavy is whatever it is that you'll be towing.

How much freeway driving do you do?

Not a ton of freeway driving, and I tow a 18ft bayliner (about 2500 lbs.), and occasionally cars on a tow dolly. But I also want better than stock performance.

4.56 gears, or don't bother. You likely have 3.73s now, you won't hardly notice improvement with 4.10s.

Alright, thats what I was thinking. I guess its gonna be 4.56's.

thanks

Any updates here? Im also looking at swapping out gears. Interested in on how everything went in your scenario.

I'm going to regear soon as well- for towing mostly.

I'm going 4.56. I have 30s right now so I'll probably be able to do some crazy burnouts with the new gears and current tires. But I'd like to get 32s soon as well. 32s with the current gears (3.55) and towing probably wouldn't work out too well.

Im running 31's now, and notice on certain hills in town it has to unlock TC, or kickdown all together...I try to play the pedal so to speak to create the least amount of stress as possible on the trans, but gearing is in my future I think. as well as 4406 swap. I do plan on towing at some point a trailer with a 4x4 atv or two, so I just step up to 4.56 just in case.
