I was wondering what model electric fan people had used on their 1st Gens...the flex-a-lite web site said to use the 175, but there isn't enough clearance between the water pump and the radiator. I could put the clutch fan back on, but would prefer electric.

Sorry, he has a '99 SOHC 4.0 V6.

I have used 2 different fans on my truck. Both are from Flex-A-Lite ( http://www.flex-a-lite.com/ ).

Take a look at the following threads:

Black Magic 150 - http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75371&highlight=electric+fan

Black Magic Extreme 180 - http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140251&highlight=electric+fan

Either of these fans should serve you well.

Good luck .......

Sorry...guess I wish I had a 5.0...lol
The only problem with these two fans is they have the same dimensions depth wise as the 175 I tried (the 180 is actually 1/16" thinner)...I just don't have clearance between the radiator and the threads on the water pump.

why would someone switch to an electric fan? Worth doing on a 1st gen?

Better gas mileage
More horsepower
Better cooling in traffic or at odle

.... and the list goes on and on.

Actually the list is pretty short, you eliminate driving the OEM fan clutched pully, you may pick up some H.P, 2/3, not the 17 as advertized by The company, you may get a tad better Mileage, maybe not.
You will not see any better cooling at odle, the OEM fan do's fine, it just robs some power, thats all.

the main reason I did it is my clutch fan was the original one from the factory and had cracks. Also I felt that the clutch fan wasn't pulling much air at idle...the electric is much better at that. This is important for me because the clutch fan wasn't cooling my A/C condenser enough during the summer months and so my A/C would start blowing warm.

hard to install? makes sense though, i swapped my failed cam driven waterpump on my TA for an electric version, gained 5-7 rwhp from it.
