why does it cost $150 to take step bars off?

The problem with some of the bolts is that they have those slide-on fasteners, which are held on with friction and a small retainer. If they come loose, they spin, and they're really difficult to get out, and you will end up using either a pneumatic hammer or a cutting tool to get them free. Locking pliers don't do the best job holding onto them either. Dremels and die grinders don't always work depending on if the rear ones break, since there isn't much clearance for a Dremel or Die Grinder to get to where they are.

Make sure if you're going to take them off, that you have all of those tools at your access especially if they are rusting... I pulled two sets off and had issues with both, it's more than just having a breaker bar or pipe to put over the wrench... You'll swear a lot too... :)

If they shear off, problem solved LOL. Buy a dozen donuts and take to a tire shop, they might even do it for free LOL.
