Well after countless phone calls and looking on the net and trying to figure out how I was going to widen my wheel base over stock and still keep with-in my tiny budget, I finally figured it out...........

Problems:

1) While flexing the rear axle, it would stuff the tire into the fenderwell and not allow it to travel and further.

2) With extended radius arms you loose quite a bit of your turning radius. ( tire rubbs radius arm)

3) Custom off-set wheels are very expensive.

I called everyone I could to try and find a set of wheels with the off-set I wanted and no one would even give me the time of day, funny enough American Racing even told me that 16" wheels would rub, BWHAHAHAHA! (what do you think is factory stock wheel I'm running?? DOH!)

Anyhoo so I bought a set of bolt-on 1" billet spacers, sorry didn't get any before pictures of the spacers, they just look like spacers 1" thick with thier own lug studs.

I couldn't use the lugnuts that came with them cause they were too long so I got regular 1/2 x 20 x 3/4" Dodge replacement lug nuts and used them to fasten the spacers to the truck them used my regular lug nuts to fasten the wheel to the spacer.

As you well know the Explorer looks funny when lifted with the stock wheel base width and is a lil unstable, so by widening the track not only does it look better but becomes more stable too.

NOW!! since this is my TOY, and not a daily driver, and if driven, it's usally a lil around town to car shows and to work every now and then, please do not reply back with a bunch of junk about premature wheel bearing wear, save that for the guys with Neons/Cavilers and the wheels that stick out past the fenders, I know what I was doing and are resonsible for any bearing issues, not only that, I'm the one whom has to fix it.
All in all it's really no different than putting wheels on that have a shallower back spacing ;)

The first picture is without the spacers, a bit dated but you get the point, the rest are after pics:

Nice! Can you feel the difference in handling? Stability wise?

Actually I live about 1.2 miles from work, so I need a little more seat time, but I guess for the record, "yes", do to the fact that there are some humps in the road that usally give me quite a bit of side to side wobble (45mph) and it didn't seem as bad, but also it seemed to dive more under braking, seeing at though the wheels are further out from the piviot points (leverage).

Like I said need a little more seat time, but I will prolly come back and say the same thing, I'm going to drive it to work for the rest of the weekend and to the local cruise-in this saturday (10 mile round trip) and I'll report back.

look good man...'m planning on milling some spacers myself to take up the difference between my full lenght front axle and my 8.8.

Looks good. Now you have a little more tire sticking out to help keep the ground off of the fenders. ;) :D

where'd you get 'em and how much did you pay (if you don't mind me asking)

SVO - I got my 4 15X8 black rockcrawlers with 2.5" backspacing with bolt on valve stems for less than $250 shipped from 4wheelparts.

My 31's with 15X8 rims & 3.75" BS seem to stick out just as much? Don't have a lift yet though.

Death wobble is considerably reduced, I need to trim the ends of the lug about 1/8 of an inch.

New pics at the top of page of the wheel spacers and the minute interferece of the wheel and oringinal lugs that need to be trimmed.

Ok, i cut my aluminum tonight. Do you think 1.5" would be too much (i'm only running a 10.5" wide tire and I have the wide Sport fender flares) I'm going to mill them here in the next few days, right now they are 38mm (1.496") thick and I'm wondering if I should cut them down to 35mm or 30mm before I finish milling them

Well considering I don't drive mine daily and not very far when I do drive it, it wouldn't bother me at all.

But if you drive yours regularly and for long distances, yes I would say this amount more will probably give your bearings a real run for the money, and don't forget that when you do this, that if there are any issues with your front end (alinement, bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, ETC) that the spacers will make it more apparent and more dramatic also.

P.S. your hubs don't fall off when taking the front wheels off ;) :p

well my bearings and ball joints are probably shot and in need of replacement anyway (and my alignment is 25k miles old) ;)

i'm thinking i'll turn em down to 32 mm (1.26") so i'll still clear the lug nut/wheel studs without having to grind. But then again, its only 0.24" difference, which is like peanuts. Any spacer is going to increase the load
