My ABS light came on and I noticed a periodic and subtle scrape/grind sound from the front right wheel well. I removed the ABS sensor and examined it, the bottom of the sensor seems to have been scraped away. Obviously the sensor has been damaged, my question is what has caused this and how can I fix it?

I don't know if that is a part that the local auto parts store would carry or not. You can try the local junkyard, or if you just have too much money or too little time, you can try the stealership. Good luck, and hopefully that is what was causing your problem!
Also, you might try to check the toothed ring on the back side of the rotor to make sure it isn't damaged. You may need to replace the rotor if it is.

Noise

Yeah, I can order the part, that's not a problem. My question is how could something get into there and damage the sensor?

The only thing that I can think of is that either the sensor ring has become "misaligned" so that it made contact with the sensor, or else some foreign matter found it's way into the back side of the rotor, where it got caught between the sensor and the ring. Does the toothed sensor ring look damaged or scarred at all?

would a brake dust shield affect it.

check for play in the bearing, that is one of the signs that it's about to go into catastrophic failure. The bearing is worn, so the ring gets off axis, eats the sensor.

If you want a used sensor, you can have the one I just pulled off yesterday when I replaced the hub assembly. Just cover the UPS charge.

Thanks Daffy

When I finally got the three bolts out that hold the bearing/hub assembly, it was pretty clear that the bearing was starting to go. I got a replacement from autozone that included the ABS sensor. Before installing the new one, I cleaned all of the surfaces w/ brake cleaner, and scraped rust from surfaces. I applied some grease (i had black lithium) to the inside of the housing where the bearing fits in. Is this grease okay? Are there any other components, that should have been checked, the hub oil slinger?
Thanks for pointing me towards the bearing.

Seems like you used the standard operating procedure found here!

I just used anti-seize instead of grease. I got a little sloppy in my passenger side with it, and got it on my lugs, oops, the nuts kept backing off on me :(

A few shots of brake cleaner, and all is better.

You did use Loctite on the bolts, right? Those caliper mounts are notorious for coming loose.

Yeah on the loctite. Thanks again.
