I'm "KINDA" sure that it shouldn't hurt anything, but I would't want to chance it myself. Drain, flush, change the filter and refill with Mercon V transmission fluid. Don't substitute Mercon V with anything else.

Type F is a "Sticker" fluid, it has larger particle size. Now while i doubt it will do any real harm to the trans, there is the chance that it could clog something up, or get something stuck. Old trick with the powerglide transmissions was to put type F into it, Kinda a pour in shift kit, but from experience it tended to trash the valving in them. Might as well go and get a flush done, they are cheap and tends to have it shifting better.

I don't see much problem with F, but don't ever put MERCON V in it. There is something incompatable with the clutch material before '96. If the transmission was completely rebuilt after this time then V would be a good choice.

damn, you mean mine would have lasted longer than 360,000 miles had I NOT ran Mercron V?

The "be all end all" 4R70W guru suggests mercron V in all 4R70W's.
The creator of the J-mod, Jerry himself said so, so I'm putting MercV in all mine.

Feel free to use whatever gives you Piece of Mind though.

Back when I was rebuilding an A4LD I ran across a FORD service memo about MERCON V and earlier clutch material. It had different dates for the introduction of new clutch material into the different transmissions. The issue as I remember was that it ate away at the binder. V has been reformulated several times and the clutch issue may have been resolved. Believe what you want.

speaking simply from experience (im a mechanic up here in canada):
if it asks for mercon, its gets mercon
if it asks for mercon V, thats what it gets
if it asks for mercon SP, ... see a pattern?
what ever it says on the dipstick, is what is best for it. its kinda just a CYA (cover your ass) for us mechanics to avoid comebacks. that being said, i am a firm beleiver in synthetics, and i run full synth in EVERYTHING. you can get synthetic mercon (i think mobil... might be wrong) thats what i am running. i wouldnt mess around too much with mixing mercon and mercon V in trannys... just my 2 cents

From what I know about transmission rebuilds (I don't rebuild them, I just have a few), Transmission can be rebuilt and then will want a different fluid.

The c6 in our 78 e-250 came with type F stock. After the rebuild it is now designed for dextron. The clutch packs are different.

I asked about mixing them before from my trans rebuild guy and he said if you put in type F in a trans that wants dextron (not completly, 1 qt by accident or for an emergency) that it would bring up the pressures in the trans mission and could make it shift very harsh. I was talking about a 700r4 at that time. edit: forgot to say, he said just change the fluid a few times somewhat quickly (once a month etc) or flush it if you want to get it all out at once if I end up with type F in the 700r4.

I'm also a mechanic and second this advice. 275000 km's and mine failed from a bound up transfercase (BIG BOOM!!!) ...the failure had nothing to do with the fluid in the transmission (broke the output shaft)... it was all about going at a moderate speed and having the chain jump and lock up violently.

i was thinking.... (not usually a good thing) would there be any problems with flushing my tranny with the carquest chepo fluid till most of the crap is out then do a rinse with the "required" fluid and then fill the tranny with it... feedback please...

After my rebuild all i run is b&m fluid.

I use the Havoline MD3 that I get at Sam's for $27 a case. Then I do a cooler line flush every 20-30K miles. Used to drop the pan and change the filter, now I have a magnafine inline. Toss in a bottle of Lubegard red and I have one smooth tranny.
