Hi all

Let’s call this the BIG PROJECT…

I have a black 96 explorer xlt v8 2wd that I parted out, all I have left is the frame, no motor no tranny no diff, and the interior is not all there, I will take pics!

I recently got a complete running 96 explorer xlt v6 2wd with a rusted trough frame...

I am now in the process of swapping all the parts needed to get the my beloved black explorer back on the road

I have swapped the differential and realized that the V8 had two extra bars one at each side that attached to the diff, the V6 did not come with that, tomorrow I will be pulling the motor and the tranny out of the white explorer, has anyone ever installed a V6 motor into a V8 x?
I’m a little worried about the wiring, any ideas, comments, insight would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Thank goodness you have both trucks, you are going to need all the wiring from the V8, ALL OF IT

The v8s have traction bars, V6 do not, but you can easily add them to your V6 rear if you want :)

Im swaping the v6 engine tranny & diff into the v8 truck.... so i guess i need all the v6 wiring not the v8

and how would i install those tractions bars to the v6 diff?

You would weld tabs to your V6 rear axle or get a V8 axle LOL

Yes you need all the V6 wiring, GEM, much of the behind dash stuff to I think

the v6 does not have a center console like the v8 did, i'd like to keep the center console...

what wiring do i need from behind the dash?

please tell me what wiring-parts needs to get swaped inside the truck, thanks!

pull all the harness and every thing hooked up to harness this is the hardest part in my mind in a swap.

what I did

I swapped an 01 v8 into an 01 v6 around 5 years ago and it was quite easy if I recall. It should be just as easy for you, especially seeing as you are dealing with the same years (both yours are 96's, correct?). I swapped the under hood harness, computer, GEM, instrument cluster and another small module inside the dash that I believe was for the PATS along with the ignition lock to use the correct transponder key. The 96's don't have PATS, do they? If not, then you can leave the lock and probably don't have the little module. I swapped the cluster to keep the mileage that was on the drivetrain (only had 10k on it at the time...was a rolled rental that sat in storage for a few years), but I don't know if you need to do that so the tach works correctly or not, but probably.

I hope that helps you.

alright finally some insight, i was ready to part the damn thing. i might after all finish this project...
