ADEQ Kicks Off Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program

PHOENIX (Dec. 18, 2002) -- The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, in cooperation with Earth 911, today announced the start of its annual campaign to promote Christmas tree recycling. As a result of last year's campaign, more than 115,000 trees were recycled in Arizona.

As part of the campaign, ornaments made from recycled paper will be distributed at Christmas tree lots throughout the state. The ornament's message, "Tis the season to Treecycle", encourages residents to call the state's recycling hotline, Earth 911, to locate the nearest tree recycling center. Recycled Christmas trees are turned into mulch or compost, helping to conserve landfill space.

Communities throughout the state have provided ADEQ with their Christmas tree collection event information. The tree collection event information has been placed on the Earth 911 phone system and web site so that residents can easily access the information. To inquire about the dates and locations of a Christmas tree collection event, call 1-800-CLEANUP or visit www.cleanup.org/ .

ADEQ and Earth 911 are planning a series of holiday radio public service announcements and newspaper advertisements to promote to reducing waste and increase recycling during the holiday season. Holiday radio PSAs will be distributed to radio stations throughout Arizona in conjunction with the Christmas tree recycling campaign.

Holiday environmental tips will be available on the Earth 911 network. Examples of these tips include reusing newspaper comics, old maps and coloring books to wrap gifts, purchasing recycled wrapping paper and using cloth napkins and silverware instead of disposables.

For more information on these programs or where to recycle your Christmas tree, please call 1-800-CLEANUP or visit www.cleanup.org/ .

For more information on the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality's Recycling Program, please call Cathy Charney at (602) 771-4170, or toll free in Arizona, (800) 234-5677.

I wouldn't mind going to it either but after the DPS raided the party last year and started arresting people, I don't think I'm too eager to go out there.

We used to have tree burns here up until about 12-13 years ago. Since then, they have chipped them instead. I always loved seeing them burn as a kid though.......:(

I've never been to a Christmas tree burn, but they look really fun. I want to go to one sometime

The City of Virginia Beach has a curbside pickup of XMas trees, then they take them and stretch them out along the ocean and bay fronts to create taller dunes. They just dump them on the tops of the dunes and the prevailing winds stack up more sand against them and over time create taller and more protective sand dunes. Pretty neat way to recycle old XMas trees.

Just go throw them out on your favorite lake/pond. Good Crappie habitat ;)
