I went to my local 4wd shop to see how much they wanted to regear my rear axle with 4.10 gears.... All i wanted done was the rear axle ive already got a front axle with 4.10s. for everything gears, install kit and labor they wanted 1000 dollars for one axle! That prompted me to look into finding a used axle (i looked but couldnt find one) i looked on website that had used parts and i found a used axle from a 97 with 4.10 gears for 275 dollars.

My rear gear cost me ballpark $275 and about $300 to have em put in.

So somewhere in the neighborhood of 550-600 total.

oh i know about how much it should cost. 5-600 was my ballpark figures but i couldnt believe it when they said 1000.

I shopped around at the Clutch/U-joint shops and found one that did gears.

My X is in their shop right now getting 4.56's front and rear PLUS they're installing my lockers at the same time seeing it's already torn down.

$850 Labor ( I supplied ALL the parts, including new seals, bearings, shims, axle shaft u-joints, gears and lockers, etc.)

I will let you know the final tally when I get it back if you wanna know.

Hope this helps.

If it makes you feel any better or worse, your locker will be just as easy if not easier to install than your spider/side gears Jimbo. I installed my rear locker on a gravel parking lot with minimal tools just prior to running Holy Cross in about 20 minutes.

ouch, I had my 12bolt GM for my C10 re-done for $700.. including a new ring and pinion, posi, bearings and seals. I used the same axles cos they were 30 spline and looked pretty solid..

most shops are gonna want to charge around $1000 for that work, just because they can. Search around someone will do it reasonablly.

I was told if I supplied the gears...it would cost $450 to install them in the front and rear.

I'm going to go talk to my mechanic tomorrow to see what he wants for a gear install. My LS should get here tomorrow on the big brown truck. I'm going to give him all the parts (gears, LS, bearings, seals,etc...), so it'll be just labor. He does great work at a fair price, so I'll let you know tomorrow what a resonable cost is.

I called a scrap yard today and im getting a rear axle from a 97 with 4.10s for 350. Im gonna be picking it up next week.

There are a few things to consider as well, I figure if you are going to have your 8.8 torn down already you mine as well do new wheel bearings and the parking brake hardware. This may be included in their quote....

$1000 for one end?!?!?!?!? WTF?!?!?!?!

most shops around here have same price on install-
$180-200 per end solid axle
$200-225 per end IFS or Twin Tractor Beam

you figure $180 for gears, $80 for install kit, and $200 for install that comes to around $450 total for the rear end. $1000 and it better have kryptonite gears/bearings.

I dunno what they include in that other than rebuild and install but its not gonna cost a grand! I dont care any more im getting an axle for 350. Im pretty happy about that.

Just got the "X" back from the shop!

330 per axle is what mine ran.

I had them replace the 3 drive axle U-joints in the front and all the seals and stuff so the bill was a bit higher. But WHOA!!!!!!!!

WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!!

It's got that "snap" back into the acceleration that I had forgotten about after running 33's with stock 3.27 gears for so long...

Can't wait to try it offroad!

Good luck with the axle! I'm glad you forund one that will work for ya!

Jim

I cant wait to go pick it up tuesday. Once i get that installed im gonna put in my manual t-case. Hrm do the manual t-cases have a different ratio than the electric ones? ive got a BW1354 and ive got a 4405e in the truck now.. hrm... i wonder..

OK, the quote is in. My mechanic will install all (LS diff, gears, cover, etc...) for $300.
