Engine Upgrade

Hello, I have a stock 2003 Explorer V6, 4.0, and I the tranny is the 55r5. i was wondering if an 8 cyl will mount up to the transmission. I would like to replace the 6 cylinder with an 8 cyl, 4.6. Has anyone tried to do this and if so, please tell me your thoughts and experiences.

No, the bellhousing is different.

It would probably be better to just look for one with the 4.6L already in it from the factory to replace yours. Out of all the engine swap upgrades out there, this one would probably not rank well in regards to the effort/outcome ratio.

All that work for 10HP? Install a 5.4 instead.

Just sell what you have and buy something different. It will be far easier and more reliable.
