Guys-I'm moving to the UK soon and you're required to have amber in your taillights (like all of the other explorer models have). But, the 2001 X-Sport has solid red taillights. Does anyone know of taillights that have the amber that will fit? Are there any 4-door models that will fit?

Thanks in advance!

My 01 explorer has amber blinkers. Its a 4 door.

These what your talking about?

Were the '01+ Sport's available in the UK? To get a dedicated turn signal you'll also have to splice in an extra harness. The factory setup uses a 2-way bulb for parking, brake/turn signal.

most people add amber bulbs to there backup lights when they bring a US car/truck there that does not have amber turn signals. but you will need to do some wiring from the front turn signal.

best thing to do is ask Howard or any of the other members of the site who reside in the UK. I know in the UK you do need 3 colored tallights, (amber, red, clear). Just find a set on ebay or from a member with a 98-2001 and swap them in if yours aren't.

In '01, the Sport and the 4-doors branched apart. Tails on the '01+ Sport don't fit any other Ex properly.

See...its the little things I don't know yet. :p Brywayjones and you both said the same thing. I will have to go look at one now.

Celly, what is the difference? I have 95-97 tail lights in my 93 Explorer, with a little cutting. The rewiring would be easy, because all of the wires are back there. Regards,

the '01-05 sports have a toatly different shape then the 98-01 4 door tails.

the 95-97s are only very slightly different then the 91-94 tails. thats why it was so easy to put them on your 1gen with minor cutting. the other tails are WAY different in shape it wont work.

They'd fit, but would look like crap, just like trying to do a 95-97 and 98-01 (except Sport) swap.

Actually no. It's a lot like how the 95-97 tails fit on the 98-01 (and vice versa). They fit, but the body lines just don't work. I met this guy via Dirty Dog who specializes in Explorer wrecks. We compared the 98-01 tails against the '01+ Sports and they look like you'd be able to put the new ones into an old Ex, but they'd look horrible because of the different body styling. We never bothered trying out the theory.

First the bad news. There where never any sport models sold over here. So no amber rear lights in the UK for the sport. I don't know about the rest of Europe though. Then the good news. You might get away with it because the vehicle is an import and only here for a short while. Best talk with the guys at the base you are going to as they have all been through the process. We also have to have side repeaters in the front wings and then there is the headlights. Yours dip to the right and ours dip to the left. No sports models means no left dip units available. Maybe the Aussies have them?

The headlights could just be adjusted to dip to the left couldn't they?

just look at the back side of the tail that gos agenst the body. on the 01-05 sport it is flat. on the 98-01s it is rounded. you would have to cut part of the tail like you do with 95-97 tails on a 91-94. and even then i still dont think it will work. but bottom of the tail is shaped different. i have seen them side to side..its not going to even fit without cutting.

Hey AK, point is, it doesn't work. Why argue over mice nuts? Fit or not, it will look like crap.
