Hey guys, long story short my 99 5.0 has a 4" Superlift on it (not installed by me) and a stock front driveshaft. According to Superlift the front shaft is ok but will wear out fast. I've also read it absolutely requires a different driveshaft. I have a clicking noise coming from my AWD system and am trying to figure out what it is. Can anyone confirm what front driveshaft I need? The front driveshaft on my truck now is a new factory replacement unit.

I've also read the 93-97 Ranger front DS will work just the same as the Superlift one. Is this true?

bump. No one?

Pull the front shaft out then drive around and see if it's still making the noise.
Just be careful about parking as these trucks park off the front wheels.

Noise goes away.

But is it possible it's something in the front drivetrain that is making the noise only when the front shaft is there putting power to it?

Also, no jumping tires or anything so I think the t-case is ok unless it's a front bearing or something but I doubt it.

OK, you either need the superlift drive shaft, or, an adapter to mate the 6 bolt transfer case flange to a 4 bolt double cardan flange.

Here is what the adapter looks like. I sent mine to JohnRock but he did not end up using it.

Check on page 5 in this thread for what he did to make the superlift work with 4404

However,
Why not just do a 4406 swap and be done with all this?

If you do the 4406 swap, I happen to have a rebuilt front drive shaft you will need, with the double cardan for the lift--increased angles.

With all the issues I've been having with my 96 recently among other things in my life, I think I may end up having to sell my 99 here shortly (probably after I get it fixed (unless I find someone who wants to 4406 swap it, then I won't even bother changing the driveshaft). It's the nicer of the 2 trucks and worth more, so that's the one that has to go. Which kinda sucks because it has the Superlift and other nice mods unlike my 96, but sometimes life doesn't work out how you want.

That being said is that the problem? The Superlift was never designed for the V8 AWD t-case? It says all 4x4's on their site but maybe this is an exception?

Yeah, that is their out. AWD is not actually 4X4 , and if I remember correctly the superlift is actually sold on a Ranger application. I do not think they support it for Explorers anymore, but I may be wrong.

What is your location?

I'm in Clinton NJ.

So if I'm reading that other thread right, I need a 96 explorer front shaft with that adapter?

Yes, but I believe the rear flange is smaller than explorer. It might need a toyota flange.

You mean I have to change the flange on the transfer case itself to fit the adapter on it, and then bolt the 96 DS on?

No
The flange on the rear of the drive shaft which bolts to the adapter.

If you can even get that adapter anymore.

I meant this as coaching you to either get the superlift shaft, or, 4406 swap as this adapter looks very weak IMO

Take a look at the threaded holes for the front drive shaft, keeping in mind the whole adapter is made of aluminum.

Forget the adapter. Serious.

Basically get the superlift shaft and be done?

I was reading something about the 93-97 Ranger shaft being able to work, do you know if that's the case?

I think you read that in the 4406 swap thread, because you need a 6 bolt flange to be able to bolt it to the 6 bolt transfer case flange.

Or, you may have read the ranger shaft would work with the adapter plate pictured above.

I copied this text from somewhere.

"if your like me you can do the swap for under 60 bucks 95-97 explorer shaft and then a 93-97 ranger front yoke and shaft and swap it into the t case you have now.. it saves you from haveing to buy that 200.00 adaptor and then haveing to shorten your d shaft.. its all in my how to"

I might just sell the truck as needing a 4406 swap or Superlift DS. That way whoever takes it can do what they want instead of me wasting time and money doing something someone else might just undo.

Does anyone know what Superlift driveshaft will work on a 99 V8 AWD with the superlift? Is there a direct bolt on driveshaft or do I have to modify something because it's AWD and not actually a 4x4?

The superlift shaft will bolt onto your awd case no problem

The picture does not look correct. It needs to be a v8 specific drive shaft, 6 cylinder has a different mounting flange. You need a drive shaft with a cv on the transfer case end. You might need to call superlift on the phone and ask.

I understand this drive shaft is close to 400.00 and prone to failure just like the stock one. For a lifted truck you want to sell, I still feel the 4406 swap will bring back more money than a lifted AWD truck will.

Or, sell it without the front shaft, take the hit and be done.

Or,
take off the lift kit, bring it back to normal ride height and then install a stock front drive shaft. Rear "should" come down with stock shackles ( I am assuming shackle lift in back) and then all you need is a set of stock knuckles, and a set of stock length sway bar links.

I would bet you could get 600.00 easily for the lift kit once it was in a box.

I think that's just a stock picture. If you look that part number up elsewhere it comes up with a different picture.
