Tranny taking a while to shift after change of fluid??

My guess is that some air got into the system, possibly in the torque converter. If it shifts OK now, check the fluid level when warm, and adjust it between the high/low marks. Don't run it overfull. It should be fine after the air works itself out. Good luck.

    Blind gasketing my EGR valve

MG, I haven't done this to an Explorer, but I did do it to a couple other vehicles. I couldn't tell a lot of difference in either one. The EGR is there basically to enable the engine to run leaner, while reducing emissions. The only drawback that I can think of, is you may experience a...

Can I just add Synthetic ATF to Power Steering?

Yes, you can use synthetic, as long as it's Mercon rated. When I siphoned mine, I could remove about 3/4 quart. If you do this 3-4 times, you eventually get a nearly complete change.

Anyway to fix abnormal tire wear?

Cd, that's called "cupping", and it's sometimes caused by worn suspension components. It can also be caused by the wheels being too far outboard from the stock setting. This gives a wider scrub radius on turns, and wears the outside of the tires in a cupping pattern. I've been trying to...

Try these: Fordpartsonline fordpartsfast fordpartsnetwork bulkpart is a good source for tranny parts.

    Weighed the Explorer today!

My GVWR is 4700 lbs (2 dr, 2WD). If I subtract 1000 lbs, that gives me a curb weight of 3700 lbs. That's close to what Edmunds says my model weighs.

    CEL code 214

Jerry, I saw this post last night, and was hoping someone would answer, because I was curious. I've looked through my FSM and Haynes, and can find nothing related to "cylinder identification circuit". My guess is that the trouble is in the ignition control module, which is located on the...

    A Little Engine Trouble

Dan, start with the first code. The first one is the most important, and the others sometimes disappear when the first is fixed. Assuming your list is in order, I would replace the coolant temp sensor. The engine could be staying in warm-up mode because of this sensor. This would explain the...

Another Dumb Tire & Wheel Combo Questions...

BossX, I think any of those tire sizes will work. The 245x75 will be slightly taller than stock, but should do fine. Your stock backspacing is 4 5/8", on a 7" wide rim. This gives an offset of about +5/8". If you're looking at aftermarket, I assume the wheels are 8" wide? If so, I would...

What do you think of the running boards on '01-up Sports?

My 00 had the step bars when I bought it. They seemed to get in the way when entering and exiting, and got the wifes pants dirty, so I removed them. I am trying to figure out a way to reposition them. They need to be about an inch closer to the body, to make entrance and exit easier. I...

    Question regarding key/chip

os1, you could probably cut the key different on each side, so that one key would work on both locks, by turning the key over. However, I know of no way to re-program the PATS system module. You could try it with an extra key. Have it cut for both vehicles, and then program the key to work...

    Load Rating?

Thanks for the info Steve. My wheels are off a 2000 Mazda pick-up, and it's good to know that the load rating was also 1500# on the Navajo. Now that I think about it, the load rating shouldn't be less on a pick-up than an SUV, because of the load that the pick-up is rated to carry.....they...

    Lettering... In or Out?

This seems to run in cycles. A few years ago blackwalls were "in" (or is that "out":D) Now people tend to run the white letters out. Mine are out, but they are a sunny beach to clean.

    Load Rating?

Hi all. I recently installed a set of Mazda truck alloys on my X. They are 15x7 with 235x75 tires, and have a load rating of 1500 lbs. Does anyone know the load rating of stock Explorer alloy rims? I'm thinking the Mazda's 1500 lb rating may be marginal on my 2-dr Sport.....???

    What Stock Gear Ratio?

It would also be interesting to know how the axle ratio related to the type engine, whether OHV or SOHC. My 00 Sport OHV has a 3.55 open diff.

am i the only one with 3.55's ???

3.55's in my 00 Sport. I feel they are a good compromise gear for both accelleration and fuel economy.

Also check the negative battery cable where it connects to the engine block. A loose connection here causes all kinds of electrical trouble, and is easy to overlook.

Power Steer Fluid or Trans Fluid

Jcarter, I picked up a repair manual last night, and while thumbing through it, found the PS specs. The 91-95's use Ford Type F ATF. The 96's and later use Mercon ATF. I have also seen specs on the early models as using PSF. I really don't think it matters much. There may be slight...

    Do I have a 5spd Auto?

According to my Haynes manual, the 5R55E was introduced in the 97 model year, regardless if it was an OHV or SOHC. There is also a TR code on your door sticker, but I don't have the trans codes data handy right now.....

has anybody ever seen this happen

Is there relevant information that has been deleted? If there are defective parts floating around out there, I for one would like to know about it. I have never seen an idler pulley fail like that, especially one made of metal.

has anybody ever seen this happen

Wow, that's scary. Where was the pulley manufactured? The reason I ask, I've seen a lot of aftermarket parts made in China lately, and I'm not so sure of the quality.

Service engine soon light on, HELP!

Zensius, I think the light turns off with about 70 start cycles. I would disconnect the battery first and see if that clears it. If not, then you can turn the key on and off until the light goes off.

    keypad on the door

The code numbers are on the module (I think it's called the RAPS) in the jack compartment on the driver's side. It's in the upper right side of the compartment, and you may have to use a small mirror and a flashlight to be able to see the numbers. Edit: It's a RAPS module instead of GEM...

Power Steer Fluid or Trans Fluid

Jcarter, the two fluids are very similiar. I "think" the earlier models used PSF and the later ones use Mercon ATF. My 00 calls for ATF. I would use what the owners manual calls for in your model (which I think is PSF).

    Start Up question?

Roadking, I wonder why the Ford dealer said you needed a new MAS? Maybe their scan showed a MAS related code, and they just thought it was a bad MAS. If you still have the old one, I would put it back on and see if the symptoms are the same. You might also try spraying the MAS connector with...

    Start Up question?

Roadking, I think the difference between the AWSF and AGSF sparkplugs is the threads. One is completely threaded, and the other is partially threaded along the shaft of the plug. This should make no difference in the running. There's a good chance the starting delay is caused by the MAS. I...

    97 Nerf Bars on 93???

The factory bars do bolt to the body side bracing. There are 3 supports each held on with 3 bolts (9 total per side). They are plenty strong, because the bar support is spread out along the side. However, 6 of these bolts (2 per support) go into a nut that is factory welded to the body. I...

    keypad on the door

Robb is correct. Unfortunatly, if someone else knows the permanent code, they can also use it to reprogram the opening code. But if they don't know the procedure, they won't be able to change the code.:D
  31. R

    keypad on the door

Schipwrk, this is the procedure in my FSM. 1. Enter the permanent 5 digit code. 2. Within 5 seconds, press the 1/2 button. 3. Within 5 seconds, enter a new 5 digit code. Do not let more than 5 seconds elapse between entering each of the new digits. That should do it. Good luck.

    Oil Change DIY

One more thing: On the V-8's you can pour about 1/2 quart of oil into the new filter before installing. On the 4.0 V-6 you can completely fill the new filter with oil. This prevents a "dry" first startup.

steel vs. alum...really a difference in weight???

I recently swapped out my chrome steel 15x7 wheels for a set of Mazda truck alloy wheels, still 15x7. I weighed them with the tires dismounted, and the difference was 4 lb per wheel. This is a considerable amount of unsprung weight to remove, and the ride and handling did improve. The...

    Secondary Transmission Filter Installed (Feedback)

Excuse me for bringing an old topic back, but I am interested in adding a tranny filter to mine. However , I am concerned about the restriction the filter puts in the line. I have heard that sometimes adding a filter wll cause "soft" shifts because of the pressure drop. Any comments or...

Anyone with a Ford Service manual? (Blinking airbag light- code 24)

Guys, my 00 FSM says code 24 is "ECS defective". ECS is the Electronic Crash Sensor, and it is located near the front of the radiator, according to the picture. It looks like it would be susceptible to moisture in that location.

    insurance question

I would replace the bumper myself. It is very easy to do, and will save a few bucks. Depending on how extensive the fender damage is, you may come out ahead. By the way, if the body shop charges more than the check you received, you can't get more money from the insurance company. Once you...

    Alignments at Sears.

I bought a set of alignment gauges from JC Whitney a while back. They will adjust caster/camber and toe, and are very easy to use. You must also have a level garage floor for best results.:) The toe setting spec for my 2000 is .12 deg toe-in, (+ or - .25 deg.) That works out to about 1/16".

why is my air bag light blinking?

98Ford, I remember reading something about "smart" airbags, that sensed the vehicle occupant's weight and adjusted the airbag deployment force accordingly. Maybe the light stayed on because no one was seated in the driver's seat? I don't know if it was available in 98; I'm just...

why is my air bag light blinking?

Krzyboy, I see that this is an old post. How did the solution turn out? My 2000 FSM lists the code 37 as being related to the passenger side airbag circuit. It says the circuit can be shorted to ground, or high/low circuit resistance. 98Ford, my light goes off immediately after the engine...
