5.9, the post that was erased was done so because it had accidentally been posted twice. I do not appreciate your attacks on me and other people on this site. Maybe we've just had good luck, but at least I know I'm not lying. If someone's integrity deserves to be threatened, usually it's the person doing the threatening.

BTW, my mother's LS400 is a '99.

Ummm my integrity? Was I saying that I beat Z28s? No. Was I saying that I can hang with Cobras? No. There is no way that you can beat or even come close to hanging with any of these cars. It has nothing to do with luck. Its called the real world. You might have been racing, but they weren't. I would also like to know how the other guy beat a 5.0 Mustang.

If you are saying that you did win then please explain to me how its possible that you beat that Z28.

You know...who really cares?! I don't care if the Explorer blew away a nascar. Seriously guys..lets quit fighting. Yes, 5.9 you have a bigger engine, but you know bigger is not always better. Every Explorer and every Jeep is different. it is pointless fighting about who's Explorer can beat which car and which Jeep can beat that car etc...
Just my $.02

Come on guys enough of this bickering. A stock 4.0L OHV Explorer is a dog. There are no ifs ands or buts about it. A stock 4.0L Grand Cherokee will walk away from it every time. A 4.0L SOHC Explorer is another matter. 16.2 in the quarter is nothing to sneeze at for something that weighs as much as an Explorer. I have driven a 318 powered Grand Cherokee and they are very quick. I don't know about the 302 Explorer or the 360 Grand Cherokee.

All SUVs can be made to perform very well, you can really make them scoot if you want to put alot of money into the engine but (except in a very few cases) they ain't no rocketship! Dead Link Removed I have yet to find a V8 Mustang or Camaro that I couldn't lose handily to. Dead Link Removed

If it ever came down to racing someone for pinks the Explorer would stay home and the old Mustang would be brought into service. At almost 2000 lbs less and nearly twice the horsepower I don't have any fear of losing to an Explorer, even if it does have a K&N filter and a loud muffler. Dead Link Removed

95 explorer sport 4.0 OHC 3.07 gear
Hey, the only thing that I can outrun is an 91-94 explorer. I can out run explorers on the interstate and bearly outrun them on take off. But hey, I get good gas mileage.
And if I wanted to race anything but another SUV, then I would ask to drive my moms mustang with a stock 0-60 of 6 secs, the fastest stock from 84-94 models. And we just put flowmasters on it. I would seriously say about 5.5 now. We haven't lost a race yet!

In my experiance with "racing", I know I my 00' sport can take most other suv's well such as blazers because I have seriously raced one with my friend. As for a stock grand cherokee, forget about it, it's a 00' and it's my dad's girlfriend's and it doesn't hold water to my sport and I don't know if the cherokee is a V6 or a V8 Dead Link Removed. I wouldn't praise a camero either. Not saying that I could beat one but my brother beat me in my friends camero when he was in a ford focus he does have a "few" mods though like a turbo Dead Link Removed, and this is a bottom of the line stock camero not a Z28 but it still got beat. I know though in my explorer "I" can't beat those kinds of cars, not if they have the pedal to the metal as well. Again these are just my experience Dead Link Removed.

I think it is hard to believe that a stock Explorer (even with the chip and K&N) can beat a Mustang GT/Cobra; Camaro Z28 from a dead stop. A GT goes mid 6 in 0-60, low 14/high 13 in 1/4 mile. Cobra can go mid 5 in 0-60/mid to low 13 in 1/4 mile. (Sources: Motor Trend; Car & Driver).

As far as the GrandCherokee vs Explorer issue I believe it depends on what type of engines you're comparing. '99 Jeep GC V6 is not a threat to the SOHC V6/OHV V8 Explorers, but the V8 Jeep GC is another story. I just witnessed a street race (stop-light-race) a month ago between a '99 V8 GC and a Honda Accord (mid 95s model). The GC came on top. They raced two more times and the results were the same. That is a one fast SUV, BUT I would still choose my Explorer V8 over any Jeep GC. Just my preference.

Wow, lots of animated discussions about who is faster than whom. So have we determined a winner for the fastest car/truck (besides mine of course...LOL)?

Matt, I did hear about your planned off road adventure and I'd love to come along. Give a little notice and I'll be there. Explorer's really shine off road too-had a wonderful time with the bro hopping pot holes and small streams this past weekend. I'm still pretty inexperienced but it sure is fun!

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but i was wondering if i put a blower on my 1998 explorer sport SOHC (BBK) with i believe 3.55 (?) gears, what do you think i could get my 0-60? With exhaust and a K&N. I'm thinking mid 7's? Hopefully? Maybe? Possible?

thanks
travis

You would be a lot lower than mid 7's 0-60 with an exhaust, filter and Blower. My '97 SOHC 4x4 Explorer Sport ran 16.374 in the 1/4 mile when stock in Phoenix. That works out to a 0-60 time of 8.0-8.3 seconds. I have since put on a Borla, SuperChip and K&N FIPK and it feels much quicker than stock. I did the same mods to my '94 4.0L Ranger and couldn't feel nearly the difference that I feel in my Explorer and it gained .25 in the 1/4 mile. I am figuring I have gained about .5 in the 1/4 mile. I am going to try and get back to the track on January 10 if I can get my co-worker to bring his Lightning back. The performance gains that were posted on some blower maker's web-site showed a gain of 1-1.2 seconds 0-60. So if mine is now running 7.7-7.9 0-60, with a blower it should be 6.5-6.9 with a 1/4 mile time of around 15.0 or just a bit less.

....man, do I see the fur flying in this thread....

Seems like some of those out there are popping testosterone pills. I was in a race just the other day and I almost whooped up on a 78 Pinto... next time by god I'll check the wind direction..and then, his a$$ is MINE!!

A few months back me and my mom were engaged in a type of race on the interstate with a prolly mid 80's Ford Festiva or some kind of little compact car. Its back bumper was just about dragging the ground, and it was just about to hop off of its front tires and start riding one hell of a wheelie...at 70 mph. We passed it because we were sick of inhaling it blue exhaust fumes and we walked right past it easy as you would think. A few minutes later it decides that we must be going too slow (ha!) and it tries to pass us. It gets its front bumper even with our back one and stays like that for about a mile, then it slowly progresses up to get the front bumper even with the drivers door. Then after another mile or so its even with us...and it stays like that for at least the next 3 miles! I was there trying to stiffle my evil little grin and devilish laughter :D I finally said "Mom why dont you either slow down and let them pass or speed up and get them behind us?" She didnt do either, she must have been enjoying herself. Finally, it got around us enough to pull back into the right lane. A few seconds later we blew their doors off :D

Now my 0-60 is about 11 seconds flat, the only things ive done so far is a flow master 50 series cat back, and a k&n air filter and I also removed the lower portion of the airbox...the last car I raced was a 97 chrysler sebring, I schooled him by about 2 car lengths...pretty fun, not really a fast car of nothing but its still fun beating people =)

I once did 0-60 in my Explorer! LOL

Does anyone notice that when you floor the truck for a while (such as passing or racing) that your temp. gauge rises up intot he upper 3/4 of the normal range? My truck always does, then after I pass the truck it will go down to the lower 1/4 of the gauge. i guess that much gas really creates a ton of heat.

5.9, you wouldn't happen to be in NC would you?

If so I'd like to personally see how fast you are. What are your specs, other than the power ratings you've already given?

I'm not going to say he's exaggerating but for Alec to beat the cars he listed seems pretty incredible. Several factors affect "street races" such as ability, intent, conditions, Hp to weight ratio, etc... I have gone against cars such as 5.0 Mustangs(5spd,exhaust,K&N FIPK)and 5.7 TransAms, we were even until about 70-80 mph then they slowly inched me. Alec's truck is the lightest version Explorer made and weight plays a big role but it still seems amazing.

I have a 96 xlt V6 and I wouldn't go picking a fight with any mustang camaro firebord type cars. the low rpm torque is there but over 3000rpm theres no power, It would be a joke to say i am in the same ballpark as a mustang of any sort, 5.9limited, you have a quick truck, any X's out there that are giving camaros and mustangs a run for there money I give you a lot of credit. after all this is an explorer site, we wouldnt bad mouth our own trucks
