I have an 02 EB Explorer that started running bad over the winter but use to run good. I need to know what all should I do to try and fix it or to fix it. The truck started not starting unless you held gas pedal to floor to start and it idles low (600) and it cuts off a lot at stop lights. The truck also shuts off when turning around sometimes and now it would start but then shut off and it did this 3 times just now before staying running. I need to get it fixed soon. I replaced the tps few weeks ago and the fuel filter and air filter today. It still didnt fix it. We sprayed carb cleaner around to check for vacuum leaks but no luck with that. Please help me get this truck back to running the way it should. Thanks

Check the IAC. You have already done the sequence of fuel filter and air filter. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=159261 is a good way to check it if you have the 4.0.
The other thing is to check the EGR. They can get stuck open at startup, and will cause symptoms similar to a vacuum leak (Low Idle, rough startup). This usually throws a CEL, but not always.

I forgot to list this. Sometimes on start ups, the rpm shots up to 2k or so and comes straight back down.

Just cleaned the iac and seems to run the same. I don't have a cel light on, but maybe not a bad idea to take it to auto part store and have it tested. I just want this problem fixed.

Is the TPS a Motorcraft one? Or is it an auto parts store brand?

Auto parts store brand. I heard of getting the factory replacement iac and not auto part store brand but I haven't heard anyone say anything about getting the factory ford tps replacement. Does that matter with these too?

The truck cut off on us after backing up and going from reverse to drive. I'm getting tired of it doing this. I need to figure out how to fix it real soon.

Now my cel light is on after checking vacuum lines and having smoke blown in intake through one of the vacuum ports. I know that didn't make the light come on.

Now after driving truck and let it sit for no longer than 3 min, it won't start unless you hold throttle to floor and then it starts. What could this be?

I got these codes....this one twice or dif codes that mean the same as these P0102 and P0113 and this one once C1230

Both of the P codes relate to the MAF. P0102 is for MAF low input. P0113 is for MAF High Input. Your MAF didn't like being cleaned, or the plug is not in all the way. C1230 is for a Rear speed input sensor. That is an ABS code.

What Happens when you unplug the IAC?

Yea, it wasn't plugged in. After I made this post I looked under the hood and saw that it wasn't.
What should the IAC do or what should happen if I unplug it and what shouldn't it do? I'll try it later. Should I already have it running when I unplug it or do it before I start it? Thanks

As per the instructions that I have read, you can do it when the engine is running. The engine should die or run terribly. If that is not the case, then the IAC is having issues.
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=165778 is a good thread for the IAC.

The other thing to check would be the throttle body.

How about the TPS, I replaced that with one that's not a factory ford brand. Is there a certain way to put them on so they will work the way they should and should I put a motorcraft one on? Thanks

There is only one way the TPS should go on. IIRC, if you put it the wrong way, the screws won't line up properly.
I usually have good luck with the store brand auto parts, but I have had a few bad ones before. I would try a motorcraft one. Remember to disconnect the battery before changing it, or your problem may persist.

Yea, I might try and clean the iac again and maybe the tb, but that looked pretty good. It idles at about 600 and shuts off on us way to many times. We just want to get that fixed soon. Thanks
